I don't know if anyone saw the Capstick video "Hunting the white rhino". Ken Wilson is the hunter. Wouldn't you think after all the hunts he's been on that he'd know where to aim?? When he finally finds the rhino he wants, it's quartering towards him. So what did he do?? He aimed behind the shoulder and into the gut !!! Totally disgusting in my book. He immediately followed up with a Texas heart shot as it ran away. The guide was pissed and called him on it and Wilson asked the guide what was wrong with the shot !!! The Guide was upset that they now had a wounded rhino to follow. The rhino died, luckily, the THS worked and of course Capstick played up what a beautiful follow up shot. This guy Wilson shouldn't be allowed to hunt. I've seen him make lousy shots in other videos as well. Didn't he ever hear of the word "edit" ????

I watched the video and have to agree that it was a fairly poor shot placement and had to laugh at Capstick's remark that his follow up shot was a "bloody good shot" that created a lot of damage as he's poking a pointing stick at the rhino's rectum.

But after all that.....what's your point?

Ken Wilson owns and is Sportsmen on Film. He has made many videos all around the world. I agree he could do with better editing, oh H*ll his videos could use alot of work. I have a friend in the UK who outfitts in England and Scotland and Ken approched him about doing two videos and Kens offer was Malcolmn would receive a copy of the videos in return for his services, of course he said no thank you. From what I have seen he is a bit of a pompous ass.

Sportsmen on Film

Ken advertised hunting safaris in Uganda. This was just before the Dallas Safari Show. There was a newspaper article in the local Ugandan press that said no such hunting safaris had been authorized.

I emailed Ken with a copy of that news article and traded a couple of emails with him. I met him at the Dallas Safari Show. All I can say is that, personally, I would never use him as a booking agent.

Terry

The Hunting World is full of people that have been screwed by the Texas Ranch Hunts he represents also. thumbdown

I did like the video in Canada where he stepped out of the Float Plane and fell on his Ass on the wet dock. I thought that showed a sense of humour when he left it in. thumb

I've seen the video and agree the initial shot was a poor one. I differ the follow up shot being a bad one though. It was the ONLY shot presented as a follow up and Saeed and others have commented on the efficacy of the "texas heart shot" on buffalo and other large game. I also share Terry's opinion on Ken Wilson. I introduced myself at SCI one year and he came across as quite snobbish. Imagine that, this guy I bet doesn't even have ONE lousy carrier landing and HE was snobbish to me! Smiler jorge

So does that mean that you would take that kind of a shot on purpose??? My only point being that someone who has hunted as extensively as Ken Wilson should know better than to take a crippling, rather than a killing shot just for the sake of a trophy!!! He admitted tht was where he was aiming. I personally would never take that kind of a shot, especially at dangerous game. If that makes me an ass, then so be it !!!

The rhino was in a fenced paddock - not like it's going to get away. He could have continued the stalk and waited for a better shot. But when excited, even experienced people make mistakes. I really doubt that anyone would shoot a rhino in the guts on puropse.

Bowhuntrrl, Lighten up! Roll Eyes I believe he simply had a BRAIN FART, and botched the shot. I've seen him shoot a lot, and he seems to know what he is doing. I noticed the shot as soon as it hit the rhino, and said outloud, damn that is the worst place he could have hit a rhino. The redeeming factor, however is, he followed up with an absolutely prefect THS, which is exactly the right shot to take, in this case.
I don't know Ken personally, but have talked to him some, at Capstick's booth at shows, and have seen nearly all his films. I find him a little spoiled, but nice enough. As far as booking with him, I have plenty of connections of my own, so have no need for a booking agent.
I'm almost certain YOU have never made a bad shot, but I have, and I've been hunting dangerous game almost as long as Ken Willson have been alive, so I'll not throw rocks from my glass house! beer

There is a video where a shot is taken at an Australian water buffalo. The bullet impact can be seen half way to the buffalo where it ricochets off the ground before striking the buffalo in the shoulder.

Shit happens. So what?

If you hunt often enough, something bad will happen (unless you're an 'armchair 'expert').

David, I shot my first head of dangerous game, a large black bear, in 1950. By my calculation, that is 55 yrs ago! Wink

NitroX

Fred Bear used to do that with arrows, making them ricochet along a fence before hitting the bullseye of............PAPER targets.

One have to be a bloody cretin for wanting to film a gutshot and to broadcast it.
Or a bloody avaricious fool (a rhino is not cheap)
or worst .............a preservationist.
