Death of a hunter

infinitoDeath of a hunter
Death of a hunter.
It is with great sadness that I have to share the loss of a great man, hunter and dear friend with you all.
Dawie Maree, Outfitter and Professional Hunter, was shot dead in his house on Thursday night last week in Meyerspark, Pretoria. We did not want to post anything until we knew what happened, but it looks like a robbery gone bad.
Dawie woke up with a man standing over him, the guy said something and a struggle started. Dawie always had his .38Special with him. The robber shot Dawie in the neck, upon which Dawie shot him in the head, killing him on the spot. Another robber was wounded, but fled. There were 4 of them. This is according to Elana, Dawie’s wife who was in the room next to him in bed.
A neighbour rushed Dawie to the hospital, where he died upon arrival.
To those who knew him, and to those who did not, he was a very good businessman, hunter, and family man. He was only 27, but leaves behind his wife, 2 kids aged 2 and 1, his mom and dad, as well as 72 employees.
To give you an idea of the life he lived, they expect 1000 people at his funeral on Friday.
Dawie on the left, David Keith from AR, and myself with Davids Lion...2007

Infinito, I am sorry to hear that. I assume that the perps did not know who they were dealing with, and at least two of them paid the price! The price was unfortunately too small. In the States we are hearing more and more about crime in RSA. It seems it is not just the immigrants being targeted. Did Dawie not have dogs? Incidentally, the picture does not show.

L. David KeithI only knew Dawie for one year, but he was the kind of man you could make fast friends with. He had a smile that instantly set you at ease, the moment you shook hands with him. On our way up to the Kalahari, Charl drove his Cruiser while Dawie and I told stories and shared many jokes. He had a great sense of humor. I met his beautiful wife while they were soon expecting their second child. I can't express my sadness or the shock I feel for Elana and their children. I can only hope and pray the remaining perp's are caught and given the maximum sentence. All of us that knew Dawie will suffer a lifelong sentence of sorrow and missing a great human. RIP

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

Use Enough GunMy condolences as well. I can only wish that he had taken them all down and lived to tell about it. I wonder if a semi-auto would have made any difference.
28 May 2008, 00:39
IgnobilisThe sick truth about these sorts of crimes in SA is that he would probably have been shot anyway - & his wife raped & shot. And all of his firearms stolen. These contempible savages always hunt in gangs, so I doubt if an auto would make a difference. I really don't know. I was mugged by an gang of 8 last year. By sheer good Grace I managed to BS them & escape with a beating. It was a very close call. Dawie lived not far from where I do now. It is difficult not to enraged.

infinitoThank you for all the kind words.
Elana and the kids are fine, although we do not know about Elane, the 2 year old daughter. She saw it all, as she was sleeping with them in the room at the time of the murder. She is receiving professional mental treatment at the moment. Elana is broken, but strong.
Good news is that there is an identikit out by the police for the others, so it will not be long now.
Ignobilis, is you want to come to the funeral you are welcome. We want to show the world that we unite as a people against crimes like this.
The service is out of the "lewendige woord" church in Meyerspark, Friday at 13:00
Thank you again all, your condolences will be passed onto the family.
