I almost had a LH Classic Safari Express Model 70 in 375 H&H caliber to sell you. I have complained several times about the functioning of that rifle in these forums. Unfortunately, I sent the rifle to Mark Penrod, and now I can not get it to repeat any of its old malfunctions. Sorry, but it's no longer for sale.

I need some advice.

I'm planning to go on a Cape buffalo hunt in the next couple of years and would like your advice on rifles. I have taken asiatic buffalo with a 35 Whelen Ackley but realize that is non operative for hunting in Africa. I have a Ruger #1 375, but my experience with brown bear and other the aformentioned asiatic buffalo lead me to believe a single shot is not the best choice. There are precious few left handed controlled feed big boomers on the market under $3000, and those are all 375s. Short of rebarreling and retrofitting a bigger cartridge into a Winchester 70 action, do you have any suggestions? I could work with a wildcate, but case maintanence is the part of reloading I like the least.

I recommend you purchase a double rifle. They are a little expensive, but you can always sell it and get your money back. But you will love a double and will not want to sell it.

Alternatively you can have a top notch big bore gunsmith build you a left handed dangerous game rifle on a Granite Mountain Arms action. They are a little pricey, but well worth it. And you can sell off most of your present gun collection to pay for it and have no regrets.

I'm a lefty and if I wanted to go bigger than a 375 for less than $3G's, I'd buy the LH MRC action for $550, a good barrel for $300, Accurate Innovations stock for $350 and leave myself $800 for gunsmithing, sights, etc.

I'd start prowling the auction sights for a Pedersoli Kodiak 45/70 (approx. $16-1700) and get it rechambered for .450 NE or .450 #2 ($250-300). Then a hundred Horneber cases, a set of dies and awaaaaayyyyyyy you go!

I'm a lefty as well so fully understand the frustration and extremely limited choices.

I'm not sure how far along MRC is with the left handed actions but since you have a couple of years, that's the way I'd do it.

They can put together a nice barreled action for you in .416 Rem. Mag or .458 Lott or some other H&H based standard round. I don't know personally but have read many good things about their barrels as well as the actions.

While you're waiting for that Serengeti just down the road from them can build you a nice stock or you could have McMillan working on one, just to mention two other choices.

MRC can probably put some NECG sights on it as well.

Or buy the action and barrel and stock and other components separately and send them to Jim Brockman among others. Based on my past inquiries though, you might be a tad over $3,000 if you go that route.

If it were me, I'd let MRC put the metal together and then get a stock from one of the above sources. A bedding job, a little load development and triple checking for function and I'm thinking you could have a knock down drag out capable rifle for under two grand easy.

OR - try to find one of those elusive LH Model 70 Safari Express .375's and rebarrel it. I had one and it functioned just fine - accuracy needed work but it responded quite satisfactorily to some bedding a re-crowning. Only trouble here is actually finding one of these.

Anyway, good luck on your hunt!

MRC has lefthanded actions available now, I received my short action last month and others have ordered and received long actions in a matter of a couple of weeks now.

I also got lucky and found a lefthanded M70 in 375 H&H last month but I only had to look for it for two years.

I would NOT invest in a cheap, second or third-rate double that sells for the same money as a good bolt action. That is reverse-economy, and you won't like the results. In a case like that, the bolt-gun will be a better rifle every time, and the bolt is more versatile anyway and just as effective.

I like Chuck's advice about calling Mark Penrod. For the money, there is no better custom riflesmith. You can trust him............

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have talked with a reputable 'smith about rebarreling a LH Safari express to 458 Lott. The problem is finding one. I have considered a Montana action, but am not sure that is necessarily a better way to go than A Win. 70. I had a very bad experience with Serengeti (re quality of work and attention to detail) and would not recommend them. The resale argument about a good double has merit. Most doubles are set up for right handed shooters also, making this a bit difficult. I did send off an inquiry to Searcy, however. The 700NE is 200 or so more NE than I am looking for. I will give Mark Penrod a call.

I would take a standard length action left hand gun and have it re-barrled to 9.3x64, 375 Hawk or 411 Hawk. contact Fred Zeglin at z-hat custom.

A "stanard" length model 70 action, in the hands of a competent gunsmith, can be successfully used to house any 375 H&H length magnum. Including the 416 Rem Mag.

Jim,

Your "JimSquare" project is along the lines of what I am looking for, but I would need more details. The LH Safari Expresses are still generally unavailable after checking sources today. I am going to be gone for a couple of weeks but can follow up on this after Christmas.

Merry Christmas to you all!! Paul
