I know nothing of the video (when/where/etc), but it looks to me like it doesn't get a whole lot closer than this. Looks like a head shot, but what do I know.

Yes, that was on the Versus show (had ele & buff on it last night by the way). On the show, they slowed the footage down and you can see the hair part on the head where the bullet hits it just about between the eyes. Nice shot and that PH was very calm about it (on the outside anyway).

The lady client made a very poor first shot in my opinion and it looks like in very heavy brush. Could have been the camera angle but the first shot looked risky to me and the lion was only wounded. This is the followup footage.

A wounded, and mad African lion is the only animal that scares the crap right out of me! Those babies are hard to stop, because they are so fast, and when you are standing, you are above the lion, and the angle keeps changeing for the lead! The old hands used to drop to a sitting position, so as to take away the changeing angle. Of course since we didn't see the PH before the charge started, I could be wrong but it looks like that is exactly what this PH did! That gives you a sraight in shot, but takes balls like an elephant to force yourself to do it! Eeker

I agree that the woman's shot seemed poor. The PH had a big grin on his face when he got up !!! thumb

Mac is right. It would have to take a lot of nerve to kneel in front of a charging lion. Even though you know its the right thing to do it just ain't natural.

If I remember correctly, that man kneels before the charge. They knew it was coming. I was impressed that he took the charge full on.

NOT! the thing you ever want to happen.

I've got mixed feelings about this footage. The guy's all right that's apparent. It is also great footage.

But, who was laughing in the background? Nothing funny happened at all.

And unfortunately just like the MS videos some moron is going try to equal that scene on purpose.

Just goes to show.

If you wait long enough, he'll bump right square into your muzzle.

Then you'll have him right where you want him! Cool

Big Guy,
I can tell you from experience, that laughter is a common reaction at the conclusion of a very stressful event. It gets misread alot, especially during police actions, but its merely a stress reliever.

I saw the show when it was on TV. There were 4-5 PH's that went after him when the female client made a poor shot. In the show, they said that the cat would select one person and charge him, which it did, as you can see. It was the shooter that came up laughing from the charge and I'm sure it was a nervous reaction to a near death experience. Very exciting footage, not that I would have enjoyed being there.

Quite a few of the old hands from E Africa where they shot a lot of lions recommended exactly what that guy did.

Get low and wait until the lion is about to bite the barrel. Indeed the most accurate way to place the shot. He was lucky the lion didn't hit him and break a bunch of stuff!

That is a great clip...I remember seeing the video on TV. One of the things that amazed me is that all of the PH's (there were 4 or 5 in the video) missed the lion on the first shot. I believe the PH who ended up killing the cat did it on his second shot.

Just imagine how much more fun it might have been if the lion hadn't been running on just three legs.

The question I have always had about that video is why was Ronnie(PH that took the charge) out in front of the others. Seems doubly dangerous as he blocked the others continued shooting and could have been shot himself. Of course I wasn't there so it is hard to know exactly how it all went down.

Wow; good eye. I didn't even notice, but looking at it again, as you say, at the time of the charge, that lion's rear right wheel was totally non-functional.

The PH is Ronnie Crous of Johan Calitz Safaris. He hunts the NRA executive for plains game on Under Wild Skies on Sunday morning TV. I met him when I hunted Calitz's Ivory Camp last year. Best lion charge video I've seen, even better than the "In the Jaws of Simba" video IMO.

I saw that episode too and I don't recall him being in danger of getting caught in crossfire. What is true is that they all were blazing away. It's been a long time since I've seen it and I could be wrong but I recall it was pretty poor shooting on the part of all except the PH who takes the cat out. I recall him firing only once but I could be remembering incorrectly. It IS exciting stuff tho!

This has been discussed in the past. The thread below has a description of the events from the PH himself.
