Just heard that another PH got hit by a buff at Makuya.

News I got is sketchy, but I heard it was while tracking elephant, unprovoked. The buff had a snare around his head and charged unprovoked. Punctured lung and groin injury, on the way to hospital in polokwane sounds bad.

I sure can believe it, both of my hunts there, there was a lot of evidence of poachers. We even ran into armed poachers last year.

First Claude and now this.

I would avoid the place like the plague.......

Thanks.

This is the sort of thing that worries me most!

I have no problems dealing with an animal I have wounded.

But being clobbered by an unknown is scary!

I wish him the best.

Interested to know who, as I do know the area was taken over by Claude's son, Alec.

Though I am no longer on the DSC Frontline Board, I brought to their attention yesterday. Also, with the assistance of PHASA's Dries van Collier and Eardley Rudman, I was able to get contact info for the family and have passed that along as well to Frontline. I've spoken with their new President and he is now on it. I suspect something can be done very quickly to assist.

Hey Bwana!

I do not know what happened with Alec's involvement after Claude passed, BUT....

A consortium of three or four Outfitters got the hunting rights to Makuya and one Chris van der Westhuizen is running the show there.

I spoke to Stephan this afternoon and he gave me the whole nine yards. The first post is factually correct. FC nearly died and his injuries is life threatening although he is in stable condition in ICU.

I hunted Makuya October last year and know the reserve well from previous hunts. I know a lot of people complain about the poaching but we walked those hills over and under back and forth and never saw a snare or a human foot print.

And killed a nice Buff.

Lets pray for FC on a full and speedy recovery, and the Bushmans Quiver family! They took this hit hard in more than one way

Yep. All prayers and wishes to the family glad to hear the fellow is doing well.

All well and good Charl, glad you got a nice buff....In the last couple of years I have gotten two nice buff there one with Claude the year before he was killed one the year he was killed. Rest his soul in heaven.........I'll bet he is relieved to be out of That mess!

That does not change the fact that the place is poached all to hell and back. Lights at night, vehicle tracks that shouldn't be there and I PERSONALLY ran in to armed poachers......

I also remember you trying to sell quota there when Claude Klienahans had all the quota.........I think it was three years ago or so, and then pulling your advert here on AR.......there is a lot of fishy stuff going on at makuya. Not saying you were a part of that mess........but someone was selling quota that they didn't have......

I was with Claude going in at the back gate.....that he hasn't been in to in months.....there where tracks everywhere, remains of campsites that he knew nothing about, lots of track on the north end he couldn't explain....on and on......

I advise any and all to avoid the place like the plague, I stick to my words.

FC is still in intensive care.
Thanks to the grace of God we (PHASA) managed to raise enough funds to keep him in hospital. It should be noted, with great respect and many thanks, that DSC donated $20k through the Frontline foundation to PHASA's Fund to directly contribute to his treatment.

Biggest problem is infection. He is still on a respirator but his lungs are functioning proper.

This is a short note, bottom-line he is not out of the woods yet, and we have been told his condition can get worse in a heartbeat.

But we should not ignore the fact that he is a lot better than before the weekend.

Please keep praying for FC and his family!

FC is a stand up guy. He treated my family with kindness and respect. He was one of our PHs when I took my family to hunt with Bushman's Quiver Safaris a few years ago. I got a text from Stephan this morning and he may need more surgery. We all pray for him and his family. I think there is a way to donate to his cause, but I don't know exactly what it is. Stephan shared a money wire account with me. But there may be a way through PHASA. I am happy to contribute.

Guys FC had to go back into surgery.

His intestine system was not functioning. I do not have the medical details or terms, but after opening up they removed quite a but of infection en cleaned up the internal wounds.

They keep him heavily sedated and although he is still in ICU he is in a stable condition.

He is not out of the woods yet so please lets keep him in our prayers.

Always sad news to hear when someone loses their life when on the job.

May I ask, do PHs or those in the safari business have or are able to take out medical insurance for themselves and employees for the sort of work they do; does not having insurance, make any difference to the quality of care they receive in times of need? Seems in this case money was a problem, lack of it determining whether he was even kept in hospital!!!!
Could organisations like PHASA obtain good deals on insurance cover for their members?

Insurance policies which include dangerous sports are not cheap and most insurance companies will not comply.
