All of the above!

I like the plain 4x just fine but 7x or 9x is nice when checking for accuracy and sometimes can be used in the field, especially for jackals!

I think a 2.5-8x36 is Ideal. I have one(Leupold VX-3) on my 338 WM and I love it.

I think it depends on which country you are hunting. The only country I have hunted is Zim (6 times) and I have only used 4x scopes or iron sights. I feel 4x is plenty out to 200 yds.

I agree with Bulldog and think the 2.5x8x36 Leupold VX III is the one to go with on a 30-06. A 2x7x32 VX II would be great as well. I have both on 30-06's.

The nod goes to the VX III, but both are very versitile, with a low end great for really close encounters and plenty on the top end for when you have the time and the need to crank it up. 4x would do but I think it is a little too much for some close, heavy bush situations and a little short on magnification for the longer shot possibilities.

The longest shot I have ever taken at game was at a lasered 427 yrds with a 6.5 Swede Ruger 77 MK II with a fixed 4 x Weaver, the cross hairs did not cover up too much of the shoulder, I was still able to get a good sight picture and it worked out fine, the whitetail fell to one shot. So I don't think its a matter of not enough power with a 4x, its when you are up close in the bush a 1.5 is much handier, so a variable with a low bottom setting is more important than the higher power.

On my last hunt in Tanzania I used one rifle, a 416 Rigby with a swaro 1.5 to 4x and used it on plains game out to 235 yrds just fine........JJ

I think 4X or iron sites would be fine for hunting to 200 yards but I prefer a 3-9X or even a 4-12X since I also like to target shoot with my hunting rifles and see how close I can get the holes together.

For a dangerous game rifle, I would use iron sites or a scope that would go at least as low as 2X.
