I saw pics of this one time, looked like quite an impressive animal, not as common as the other species. Anybody hunt them? Just curious for some more info. about them. Isn't there some grandslam of twisty horned animals and they are one that you have to get for that? Red

the lord derbyis the largest of the eland family, available in places like the cameroon or CAR. It is usually a hunt sort of all by itself, You may get other animals, but I wouldn't count on it. Usually a 3 week type hunt, and in the 35000 range. Yes they are one of the spiral horned antelope. Usually the hunt entails lots and lots of walking.

forgive my interruption but I know that there's at least two varieties of zebra, and at least two species of kudu etc but didn't know there was the Lord Derby Eland and other kinds of Eland as well. Will someone enlighten me please. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Vapodog, The Lord Derby Eland has much larger horns then the Common Eland found in southern/eastern africa. Up to about twice the length. The Lord Derby is found mainly in CAR, Chad and Cameroon, but is also supposed to still exist in small quantities in DRC, Nigeria and Southern Sudan. It's also a bit more reddish/brownish(?) in color than the Common Eland if I'm not mistaken. There is also an Eland found in a couple of west african countrys (Senegal and Mali?), but I'm not sure if it is a Lord Derby variant or more like the Common.

The lord derby eland is more colorful the the common southern eland and has larger rounded ears. The body size is very similar between the two species with only the larger horns of the Lord Derby distinguishing it as the Giant Eland. It is redish brown to chestnut in color with very distinguishable white stripes. It has a short dark mane with white borders around the neck and top of the shoulders. The common southern eland is tan with faint white stripes and the ears are much smaller and narrow than the northern cousin. We seldom get to choose But I've seen them go both ways And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory Than to slowly rot away!

quote: Hunted them in the late '70's in CAR with a French outfit with my friend Franz Coupe. Lots of walking, spooky animals. Beautiful animals. Also nice Western Roan, scraggy lions and buffs for the taking, some els, but no ivory worth having so passed on the, lots of giraffe for those inclined. I am sure things have changed. The Emperor was in change of the run down ramshankle country at the time. Still flying worn out WWII D-3 transports then. They held our flight and got to see the Pres. of Chad crawl of one and walk down the red carpet they had laid out for him. Not worth anways near 35000$US in my mind, but for the ego trip the $ are extracted. Cheap in those days. And it's not all inflation. It's what "trippers" are willing to cough up! It buys a lot of buffs in places like Zim and a lot more adrenalin.

I haven't hunted them, but I saw them on several occasions while I was hunting Roan in Cameroon in Mar 04. Incredible animal! I'd love to go after one, but I just can't figure out how to come up with the cash. You can do it for less than $35K, but I have yet to see a hunt for less than $27K. Lot of cash, but then like I said, an incredible animal. One time while we were stalking roan we had a herd of over 100 of them cross a clearing about 75 yards in front of us. Mostly cows and young ones, but a couple bulls in the bunch. I don't think they are much larger in the body than the other eland, but those horns!!! WOW!!! I have a Cape Eland with 37 inch horns and it isn't even in the same leaque as a Lord Derby. I hated being an "Average Joe" instead of a wealthy man when that herd crossed. All the Eland on quota for that area in Cameroon were already in the salt and all I could do was look. Maybe I need to call the banker and see if he can float me a loan. I'd love to have one of those on the wall. Mac

Comparison of Eland sizes. Largest horns. #1 LORD DERBY #2 LIVINGSTONE #3 CAPE (or COMMON) Though there have been some over 40 inches. #4 PATTERSON (or EAST AFRICAN) Largest body. #1 LIVINGSONE #2 LORD DERBY #3 PATTERSON #4 CAPE These are just generalizations. Nothing solid, of course.

I took a Lord Derby in 1999 in northern Cameroon. They are incredible animals and that area has 8 or 9 other animals to hunt. Mike

I`ve read a story of a "chasse-libre" hunt for the Lord Derby Eland. I think it was Cameroun.. Is this still possible? And what would the expense be? Thanks! Anders, Ask BOGHOSSIAN on this forum. He is very interested in Chasse libre in Cameroon, I am sure he has gathered valuable datas. This Englishman is speaking French better than me and is linked tightly wiht Africa even if for the instant he is a student in Glasgow. An eland+ +2buffs+ roan +Hartbeest+waterbuck+reedbuck+bushbuck+warthog+bushpig+n duikers for less than 19 000$. I’ll fly to the CAR in a couple of weeks for the first time. I booked with KOTTO SAFARI, this outfitter is not advertising but the most prominent French hunters are more than pleased with his performances. Best of all, the success rates are very high and the prices are the lowest known, no mystery because no advertising costs. Here is the site, kotto safari a pity it’s not in English, but don’t try to change the French. If I can help? I booked for 2 weeks (there is only one flight per week, from Paris, on sunday) for Eland, and plain games (2 buffs) preferably bow hunting if possible. I think one lion is available but leopards are still shot. The Eastern Kudu is available on special request. Dago Red, The spiral horned grand slam is one of the Holy Grails of African hunting if you can do it. The spiral horned antelope include: 1) Eland (4 sub species) 2) Greater Kudu (3 sub species) 3) Lesser Kudu (I think there is only one) 4) Bongo 5) Nyala (including Mountain Nyala I think there are 2 subspecies) 6) Bushbuck and I think I am forgetting one. Anyway, since the Derby Eland, Bongo and Mountain Nyala are all expensive hunts, you have to have a lot of time and money to pull this one off. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.
