Looking for a list of African countries, their actual elephant populations and their sustainable populations..
This is for a discussion with a good friend who wants to know "how one can shoot an elephant or any animal that should be on the endangered list".
Any data would be greatly appreciated..

I have been looking into this as well. It's hard to nail down specifics because each source seems to show a different number. This is one source:

http://www.elephantdatabase.or...rica/Southern_Africa

I have heard Zimbabwe could have closer to 80K and is the size of Montana. Montana Elk population is supposed to be about 125K. Larger sure, but elk are not nearly as devastating on habitat that elephant. Drop 80K elephant on Montana with their feed needs and see what happens, One of the most salient things I keep in mind, and tell others, is from PHC's elephant video, the idea that elephant do not live in a homogenous habitat. People too often to think of 'elephant' as a singular body or herd. Show someone an Africa map and explain that Zim and Bots have nearly 200K elephant (based on what i can find) and both countries have (or had in the case of Bots) active hunting (500 from Zim and 400 From Bots before closure according ot latest CITES numbers). Then show how many miles away Kenya is and people will get the idea that you cannot conflate the body of elephant across the continent.

BUzz Charleton's site is also an excellent source for info on their anti-poaching operation DAPU. It really shows how hunting and safari operators are the good guys and not the bad guys. We live in a complex world, and people need to learn to hold more than one thought in their head at the same time. When they cannot do that, they will never understand the complexity of things like elephant hunting. Good luck!
