William Negley died on November 7th in San Antonio, TX at the age of 92. Excerpts from his obituary include the fact that he was the first and only bow hunter to take the African Big 5 without a back up gun. This feat was accomplished with a traditional bow with a pull weight of approximately 100 lbs. His other sporting achievements include captaining the last United States Team to fish the International Tuna Match in Nova Scotia as well as being the holder of several fly rod and bow hunting world records. In later life his tireless endeavors on behalf of conservation earned him the 2000 Conversationist Of The Year Award from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission. Mr. Negley's family has requested that contributions in lieu of flowers be sent to Phillips Exeter Academy or the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation. I would like to add on a personal note that the time that I was privileged to spend with this man in the field and on the water rank near the top of the wonderful memories fishing and hunting have given me. | |||
