When trophy hunting elephant, which do you put the most emphasis on, what you "think" they will weigh or how the tusks look.
I saw quite a few pictures of elephants at the Dallas Safari Show [and other places as well], and several times the tusks that weighed less actual;ly looked better, ie more attractive.
Maybe for me it is the geometry of the tusk.
Very short and thick or very long and thin just do not look as good to me as some that are long and thick [assuming weights are similar].
I was very happy with the way the tusks looked on my first bull [you can see it at www.safarivideos.com my initals are TB].

Opinions???

Regardless of whether it is tusks, horns or antlers, a lot of time the biggest trophies look odd.

I would much rather have a set of 65 lb. Tanzania tusks than a set of 65 lb. Zimbabwe tusks...Tanzania tusks may be 7 ft. long and Zim tusks might be 3 ft. long..I like the length..

but I really would like a set of 100 lb. Moz. elephant tusks, given my druthers, thats a nice balance of weight and length. then again a TAnz elephant with a 100 lbs would be about 10 or so feet long, I think, wow!

I like long and thick...heck, who doesn't???? But if I had to choose between 60 pounds and short and thick or 50 pounds and longer and thinner, I'd probably choose the lighter, longer tusks. Again, the aesthetics of the longer tusks win out. If the differential was much more than 10 pounds per tusk though I might reconsider.

I had to stop by Tanzania Wildlife Safaris booth in Reno. They are taking some excellent ivory from their concession which encompasses the entire southern half of the Selous.

The pictures they had sucked me in and I would vote for a 70lb Tanz. Elephant over a 70lb Bots. Elephant.

Who am I kidding I'ld take either one.
