If you were planning to go to Africa and your calibre choice was one which would not normally be available at gun shops, say 378 Wby, then could you arrange for the gun shop in the area nearest to your destination to obtain the ammo well before you left.

In other words could you send them the money or distributors of ammunition the money to buy the ammo well before your trip.

Also, would there be any limits on what you have arranged to be bought and sent.

You know, I wonder about this too. In talking to the wife we muse about htings that would be fun to do. She mentioned once moving to Africa, she's a teacher and saw listings for openings there, and I told her I might be able to opena gun shop. And the one thing I thought would really bring in people is having a wide selection of ammo, because from postings on here it sounds like except for the very very basic (06, 375, 458win) it is hard to find ammo over there.

Are there problems with businesses importing?

I would guess that you could do this however some ammo may take them a while to get. I could be totally off base here but talking with my PH he can get most anything he wants it just costs him a lot more money and takes a lot of time. This applies to South Africa. In Zimbabwe things are a different story. I can not speak to other areas as I have yet to visit them.

Don't forget the hassle and cost of export/import permits.

500 Grains,

I am assuming there is some system that allows Wby ammo to be secured by gunshops.

For example if you were coming to Australia and in the highly unlikely event that you were coming with 378 and 460 Wbys in Mark Vs Big Grin, if you sent me the money I could order the ammo through the Wby agent and it would then be sent to the appropriate gun shop.

Does something like that exist in Africa.

I wouldn't bother, you won't have time to shop that much probably and it would be more hassle than its worth...If things get lost its best to use the outfitter rifle or rent one at the local spt. gds. store..Looking for any kind of ammo these days in some parts of Africa is weeks excursion it seems...

In South Africa the PH cannot get the ammo unless he also has the same cartridge. You cannot have or buy ammo for which you do not have a gun ownership permit. It's illegal to posess ammo for a firearm you do not have a permit for. The neighboring farmer was stopped and found to have a small box of .22 rimfire ammo in the cab of his truck. He was arrested and jailed because he did not have a .22 rimfire gun permit. How silly is that? Yet it happened to our neighbor! He was released but if found guilty he faces the loss of all his guns then may be banned from firearm ownership!

You can buy ammo with the permit if you can find it. This is one of the most logical reasons for the success of varios cartridges around the world today. The 30/06, 308, 270, 300HH, 375HH and sometimes the 458win mag for example are usually very easy to find because they are so popular. This sells more guns and fills the shelves with stocked ammo in even some out of the way places.

The unusal cartridges are a bugger to deal with in almost every way for an international hunter. Also as Ray has pointed out the best or closest location for the additional supply might be as much as a day or more drive to fetch. Not at all practical for a short Safari trip, and nobody except a permit holder for that cartridge can pick it up for you!

But the gun shop could pre supplied and they don't need to worry about its popularity since it has already been paid for.

Can the permit hunter buy as much of the ammo he wants from the gun shop. Or in this case not "buy" since has already done that but "obtain"
