My wife and I and our friend are going to hunt in Africa again this year. We have hunted Namibia and Tanzania. We are looking for new areas to haunt(pun intended). Money is a consideration but not the only one. We want buff and assorted plains game. A fine leopard would be a plus. The outfitter has to be reputable. We were scalded last trip and want this one to go much better.
Given a choice, which is going to be a better location? We went to Dallas and left more confused than ever on where to go. Of course, many of the representers tried to change our minds on where to hunt especially if they had nothing to offer in Zimbabwe and Zambia. My wife, Susan, wants to shoot a crocodile??? I guess that is better than trying to get her a lion !!!!!

You might want to check out Sable Safaris in Zambia. I've hunted with Schalk van Heerden, one of the two founding partners, in South Africa with complete satisfaction. Here's their web site; read the newsletter for a report on their first season and look at their packages. They specialize in buffalo, lion, and leopard packages (plus plains game), and their photo galleries show hippo and croc taken. They arranged for me to hunt the sable pictured at left on a private ranch near Lusaka.

I tried your link and it has an error message. Do you have another?
Never mind, I entered the address directly and have the link. Thanks again.

You didn't come up with anything at Dallas? Who did you talk to?

I have heard that most top outfitters are pretty booked for 2005, and are working on 2006. At this point, try HHK for Zim.

If you want a great place to hunt and take your spouse, you can find no better than Big 5 Safaris in the Chewore North area of Zim. The camp is excellent and sits on the banks of the Zambezi river.

You will have an excellent chance of taking good buffalo, crocodile and leopard. This is in addition to plainsgame and fishing.

It is also extremely safe, assuming you fly into Harare and get directly on the charter plane. After that, we will not see anyone who isn't associated with Big 5.

I think anyone you speak with who has been to this camp will agree. I took my wife the first time as an observer and she loved it.

I took Mark "N'gagi" Jackson with me as a hunting partner the 2nd time I hunted with Big 5 (Aug. 2004), and he is already planning to go back in 2006.

At the advice of a ph friend of mine and in light of the mess last year, I would hold off on Zambia until June or July. He said the concessions were not sorted out yet. We just had this discussion this afternoon. Zim or Zambia can be good but there are a lot of issues to sort out for both places. Take your time and do lots of research.

That is were a booking agent comes in. He knows the countries and the outfitters and can help you narrow it down, or suggest a certain option. Drop by the Atcheson booth (558), they'll help you sieve through the options.

I'm by no means an Africa expert, but I had a very satisfied client at John and Laura du Plooij's operation in Zambia (booth 759). So satisfied that he's going again this year.

Frans

lb404,

Check out Balla Balla Safaris in Zambia. You can have your buff/plains game hunt no problem. Also, in speaking with their ph Dene Bird at the Houston show, they may be able to arrange a croc for your wife.

I'd vote for zimbabwe while its still there. Prices are much less than zambia and plains game more plentiful both in species and numbers. For an outfitter I'd use jumbo moore & go down into the loveld. excellent plains game area and for my money at least he has the best leopard area in africa. If he's full I'd try buffalo range & barry styles

Just spoke with Peter Chipman (Lower Lupande, Zambia), who is heading to Reno. He says that they only have 2-3 buffalo tags for this year.

Note prices for a 7-day buffalo hunt here are actually less then HHK in Zimbabwe. I'd expect other Zambia operators to be in the same ballpark ($8500-$10,000).

Good luck!

I am negociating a deal to start bookings again in Mozambique..The same concession area that was once made legend by Safarilanda..Lot of interresting history here, and was trod by Taylor, Bell, Manners, Selby, Ruarke, Hemmingway, and a host of others.

It is a great concession and has not been hunted for a decade. the trophy quality is very good indeed and it is enough North to get one out of the swamp land..

I am pretty excited about this deal, and plan to hunt it if the deal goes through, baring unforseen issues its pretty much a done deal I think..I have hunted the PH in Namibia and in RSA on ocassions and have always had good reports on this young man. Now if they will just lift the ban on elephants this will really get everyones attention, there are a few old tembos that would blow your mind on this outfit.

What concession area in Mozambique is this? Will you be booking hunts for later this year or in 2006?

Ray,

I would be very interested in info concerning Mozambique as it become available. Specifically for '06 since I'm booked for this year.
