Terry Thanks for the postings, interesting, here are my personal views. If we are talking Southern Africa the problem that has developed with game parks going to the dogs is basically happining because of the general lack of money and expertice that member countries have with the new Africa ... Not to labour the point tooooo much we had fantastic national parks in Africa in pre independance days and we know the main reasons why things have deteriated in present day Africa, the governments have deteriated and so has the life of millions ... that is the politial side of the reality presently facing Africa .. Now how to fix the problem ... If it is left to the governments it will NOT work, believe me or if you dont believe me then come back to me in the future and lets see how things are progressing under government control .. IMHO the only way to do it especially in the larger parks is to sub-divide the parks into manageable size areas and fully privatise the project, no government involvement. Something along the lines of what is being done in SA whereby private owner or conservancy game ranches are the way that game numbers are being increased, private game management is becoming the flavour of the month and it is working because it is in private hands ... so if we take this developement to the next stage and split the parks into these smaller blocks then there is some hope I believe. WE are located adjacent to the kafue national park in Zambia and all of us know how depleted that park is at present from the times of plenty ... WE in fact suggested in writing to the powers to be on how to manage the park and even offered assistance with ideas and the likes as we could clearly see that all the money which [ well meaning ] outside agencies like the EU were pouring in was going into the proverbial black hole, do you think we got a reply, not on your life, they dont want help they only want bloody handouts and then the money filters away as we all know toooo damn well, whats new !! ... Zambia is now starting more and more to go down the private game ranch road with some success. So if these so called millionair entreprenuers keep there thinking caps on and listen to us local Africa ranchers with experience and expertice there is still hope, provided it is kept in private hands without goverment bloody mindedness. We live in hope !! Peter | |||
