Ladies and Gentlemen,

I was leafing through some literature I received on hunting in Namibia, and was surprised by two items I noticed there.

1. They specifically said they do not allow caliber smaller than a .300 magnum to be used on either kudu or eland, but can be used on the smaller species.

I wonder if this a legal requirement?

2. A wounded animal is charged 130% of the trophy fee to cover what the outfitter would have gotten for the meat??

I just returned from there, the people I hunted with wanted us to use at least a 175 gr 7mm on the larger antelope, but that was a recommendation. They also charged a trophy fee if any game hit was lost, just like everyone else in Africa, never heard of the 130%. I took a .375 H&H to hunt everything with, but by accident shot a big kudu bull with the 7x57 and 160 Nosler that my son was shooting.

The picture I get is you and your son were walking along when you bumped into your son causing his rifle to discharge and the bullet hit an unlucky kudu who happened to be big.

Saeed...I have several different booklets I picked up at the SCI that were published by the government of Namibia and nowhere does it mention either of the conditions cite. Sounds like a private/local requirement.

I shot all my stuff in Namibia (including Kudu) with 30/06.
I book hunts in Namibia and we suggest 30/06 or larger but...my wife used a 7/08 for her Oryx. [Smile]

In Namibia game meat can be sold to the butcher for about 80% of what they get for farm raised beef. The extra 30% on the trophy fee would cover the lost meat.

I have never seen this 130% fee but I would not have any problem hunting on a ranch that has this rule. Part of the reason trophy fees are so low in Namibia is the fact that the meat from the trophies brings in extra cash.
