I was reading about self guided hunts for elephant in Cameroon. Beside elephants, the author hunts birds and duiker. When talking about his rifles, he said he only took one: "I use a .416 Remington. I use an inset that allows me to shoot .41AE pistol bullets and another insert that allows me to shoot the .410 shotgun shells in this rifle."

Can anybody educate me about the inserts and bullets?

It is amazing what some folks will try, so this could actually have been tried! The 41AE might shoot alright at close range, the 416 is a .416 dia, and the 41 AE is .410 dia,and the twist would be all wrong for the little short .410 bullets. The 410 ga would do nothing more than lead up the rifleing in the rifle barrel, and patterns would most likely have some very large holes in it's spread! Sounds like an evening by the fire, "pipe dream" to me, but one never knows!

PS: Diameter of the 416 edited to the proper diameter, brought to my attention, by jim is his post!

Could you be refering to Reinald von Meurers book "BUFFALO, ELEPHANT,& BONGO?

He writes of using inserts for his 460 WBY.

He states he gets his reduction shells from Damascus-U.S.A.

He uses a Bull-Pup 460 WBY.

After my June Safari to Zim I have discovered that Elephant hunting is the thing for me. Someday I will hunt Forest Elephants. I will use my 450/400 3 1/4" double rifle.

I will develop some quiet loads using Nitro For Black techniques with 300gr .025jkt Hawk bullets.

MacD37,

Actually, the .416 Remington shoot bullets that are .416 in diameter, not .411.

That fact even makes the thought worse, and means neither one would work, IMO! !

You are correct,Jim, being a double rifle man,I was thinking of the 450/400 3" Alzhimers desease is hell! It runs in my family,on both sides, maybe you've noticed!

Here is the complete comment that Cam Greig makes in his article on the African Hunter website and his rationale for it's use:

I use a .416 Remington. I use an inset that allows me to shoot .41AE pistol bullets and another insert that allows me to shoot the .410 shotgun shells in this rifle. Since duikers are one of the main fares it is good to have a small, quiet load. If you plan on hunting elephant you must have a smaller load for duiker as the elephant run when they hear a rifle or shotgun go off.

Here is a link to the entire article which goes into detail on considerations for a "chasse libre" hunt in the Cameroon, Congo (Brazzaville), or CAR:

The Ultimate African Self Guided Hunt

I can't remember where Cam got his inserts made, but if there is any genuine interest I can contact him and find out for you.

As the hunter is a DIY/self-guided hunter maybe he knows a thing or two or has tried them.

I am sure you can pot game at close range with guns that don't horror-of-horrors shoot within .25 of an inch at 300 yrds
Here is an article about it.

I sent Cam an e-mail and here is his reply. Does anyone have contact detail for MCS? No website turned up on a Google search.

Alan

Alan,

Thanks for the update. I will note how I use a .410 shotgun shell in my .416 Rem. Mag.

With my .416 Rem. Mag. I have made a couple of small rings that fit over the shell and slide down to hit the brass. When the shotgun shell is inserted in the chamber the ring holds the shell a bit off of the face of the chamber and allows the claw to grab it.

I think that this is only necessary in the "non-controlled" feed guns. In any case it works perfectly. The versatility of your .416 then is complete including a small shotgun. I also use the .41AE shells in a cusom holder.

I believe MCS made the insert holders for me. I think they have moved to Alaska, but still do custom work when asked.
