another hyena - we were in an area a few years back that was having hyena problems. The PH had a tape recording of heynas. We turned it on and heard 2 answer from far away immediately. We turned the tape off and within 20 minutes they were actually right at the rear end of the truck

We were in Lemco during September 2005 with KB1,
(Mike and Linda). They had Wayne Williamson as their PH and we had Terry Fenn.

A plan for hyena was made by chaining Mike's dead baboon to a tree in the dry Bubye riverbed. That evening we set up on a bluff overlooking the baboon and Wayne began playing a cassette tape of hyenas on a kill. A short time later, lions started grunting back and forth. Soon a hyena was seen trotting down the riverbed to the dead baboon and Mike made a good shot.

The hyenas never answered the call vocally, but the lions were really stirred up.

Wendell- If you are in an area that it is tough to get a hyena on bait or do not see them, then the best way to get them to you is by calling them in (if legal of course) The best two methods would be to have a CD or tape with Hyena calls and play on the truck speakers if it has a system. My favorite calling system though is the Fox pro. This speaker you put about 20-30 yards from you while you sit by a tree or in the truck if you want and you work it with a remote. You can buy Hyena calls and just about any other animal call to download to the Fox Pro. It even has a little fluffy tail that moves that really catches the hyena's interest once they get close to it. Works great for Coyote's and any other night animals.

I've got one recorded and it works great. It seems that I recorded it off of the internet. I also have a great black backed jackal recording as well. It might have been from Saeed's recordings that he made available, but I can't recall. I made CD copies for my PH John Hunt last January when he was here for the SCI Convention. Look here on AR. I believe that Saeed has made them available and you could download them. Of course, the regular predator calls work well, too. I called in a very nice Brown Hyena (couldn't shoot him) with my T-Rex predator call last August. It was fun to seem him come running to the call in broad daylight!
