Tanzania: Lion Storms Home, Mauls Father, Son in Katavi Village

By Mussa Mwangoka

Sumbawanga — A lioness has raided a house at Sitalike Village, Nsimbo Division, in Mlele District, Katavi Region, and killed two people instantly.

The 5 am incident occurred yesterday at the village located partly outside the Katavi National Park in the region.

Speaking on the phone, Sitalike Village chairman Christophar Anjelo named the deceased as John Jeremia, 45, and his five year-old son.

On the fateful day, he said, the victims were asleep inside their house, which was not built strongly, when the lioness stormed it and killed the occupants.

He said after the man eater had entered the house, it attacked the father of the child and started sucking his blood, a situation that forced his wife to flee for her life, leaving behind the child.

The village chairman narrated further that the lioness sucked the blood of the man until he died, adding that the man-eater then attacked the child and ate him up, leaving the head, which she later carried to a nearby bush.

News about the lioness reached the village leadership that informed game warders at the Katavi National Park, who then launched a search for it in cooperation with residents of the village.

According to the village chairman, the lioness was tracked down and later shot dead by the warders, who left with her.

Katavi Regional Police Commander Dhahiri Kidavashari confirmed the killing of the persons by the lioness from the Katavi National Park.
