Right on Don!

I know these last few years have felt like decades. Time to spoil yourself with some quality R&R good buddy! And maybe a few new toys for good measure. Smiler

And while your at it (looking after #1, that is), move your butt out west so we can hunt together more often!

Cheers,

I remember those years - it took more logistical effort to take the wife to the movies that it used to take to plan and execute a week-long hunting trip!

Cheer up, though, by the time you are too old and fat to hunt you'll almost have enough money to buy books about Safaris!

In Ohio alimony can be anything from zero to life.

Mine was 4-1/2 years - enough time for the Ex to get a college degree or OJT if she actually *tried*.

She wanted it longer, but knew that as soon as the youngest went off to college she didn't have a chance in Hell of getting more money from me.

FLASH - I just got a letter informing me that the County will continue to take money out of my check until they are *SURE* my Ex does not want to sue me for more.

The letter goes on to inform me that this will happen even though they acknowledge that they have *mistakenly* overcharged me thousands of dollars over the years. It seems I must continue to add to the overage -- which I will probably never see again.

The Agency seems to employ only divorced women - I wonder how fair and unbiased they are? boohoo

I got divorced in Nevada and was happy with only paying 1250 a month for 2 children. Alimony can be anything if you read the below..

ALIMONY/MAINTENANCE/SPOUSAL SUPPORT: Unless there is a premarital agreement otherwise, either spouse may be awarded alimony, without regard to marital fault. The alimony may be a lump-sum or periodic payments. The award of alimony must be just and equitable and consider: (1) the respective merits of the spouses; (2) the condition in which they will be left by the divorce; (3) who acquired the property to be used for alimony; and (4) if there are burdens imposed upon the property for the benefit of any children. In addition, the court shall consider a spouse's need for alimony for the purpose of obtaining training or education relating to a job, profession, or career. Other factors which the court is to consider are: (1) whether the spouse who would pay the alimony has obtained greater job skills or education during the marriage and (2) whether the spouse who would receive alimony provided financial support while the other spouse obtained job skills or education. Alimony may be provided for a limited time period for job training, career testing, and education. [Nevada Revised Statutes; Chapter 125, Section 150].

Congratulations Don, and hang in there on the rest. I have been divorced from my first wife since my youngest daughter was 18 months old. One fifth of my wages has gone to her since, she turns 19 in about a month. I managed to get the CS sent to her account directly last year when she started college, boy did that piss off the ex Big Grin, since it was her "fun" money. The child support people here in Iowa are all women too, go figure. Luckily, Iowa has no alimony, or I'm sure I would be paying that too. Child support is OK, as long as it is used as intended, but alimony is pure BS. If the ex had any brains my son and daughter's education could have been paid for long ago.

Ahhh, if you were military, you'd never have an end to "alimony." They take a portion of your retired pay forever. The only federal position where your retired pay is considered mutual property. thumbdown

Don_G,
I well remember the day I wrote that 24 day prorated last check for CS.. wonderful feeling! Yes the phone still rings "Dad could you....", but that is what dad's are for I guess, I didn't mind that at all since it was directly to my kids.

The Kansas Child support Enforcement Division also seemed to be highly populated with women, but I found that when I requested to speak to case workers supervisors, the higher up the ladder I went the more the attitude changed to one of them being tired of mommies abusing the system & I did in fact receive the over payment monies back... so keep playing it straight up & don't be afraid to work the phones to higher ups.

Guys,

I've got about 14 more years of paying! I look forward to the day of it ending, but will continue to hunt well till that day! That alimony is pure crap. I was lucky and only had to pay a year of it. That was a painful year when it came to "hunting" funds, but living out in rural Alaska makes hunting much easier and less costly!

Don:

Congratulations! Been there , done that, although it was 25 years ago! You've already done the hard time, so just relax and take whatever the short term brings you. There's a light at the end of the tunnel and believe me when I say, "It's the best money you ever spent!" Now go do something irresponsible.

Thanks, all.

I have actually not been bitter or vindictive during these last four years, but here at the end game I find myself getting a bit worked up by the seemingly endless hassles.

I did call the supervisor today, and after some detailed questioning I found out that though I still have to keep paying the full amount during the "protest period", a simple request on my part (done) will prevent my Ex from getting any of the money they continue to take from my paycheck. I'll then get the cash in the account back in a lump.

The thousands of dollars in overages that she's already cashed - they will force her to pay back by garnishing her wages just like they've been confiscating mine.

Judge -

I already have a cheap Japanese motorcycle that runs rings around a Harley, costs about 1/3 as much and needs no maintenance other than oil changes. There is an unexpected operating cost in the "performance awards" that Ohio's Finest like to hand out!

I'll spend the money that a good double costs on a hunting trip!

Canuck, She'll probably have to pay me back $10 a month for life, but I'll cash those insignificant checks with great satisfaction!

I know a guy who bought a Honda dirt bike (4 stroke ) 17 years ago and has not changed the oil yet. The engine still has plenty of compression, although the seat and fenders are shot to hell.

My ex-wife get's about $400 a month for the next 12 years. Kind of painful to think that every year I pay for a plainsgame hunt in Namibia without going.

She has never asked for more, and we did it all out of court, so I guess I really can't complain.

I am active duty military too and I was married to her for 5 years, so she was entitled to 5 years of my retirement. Good thing she was too young and stupid to know that then.
