gotogirl3Atcheson/Fontana on NGC
One of National Geographic Channel's Hunter and Hunted episodes is on cape buffalo becoming more aggressive and they are using the Fontana & Atcheson incidents as the basis. It is on right now but comes on again Monday @ 4 p.m. Central.
Maybe everyone already knows or doesn't care, but just FYI.

DPhillipsI'm watching it right now, just logged on to see what was being said.
Not sure what I think, yet.

DPhillipsThough I didn't catch the first of the show, they seem to keep insinuating that Fontana was hunting buffalo at the time of the charge, I thought he was hunting lesser kudu, not buffalo.
Edit:
They just stated Fontana was hunting lesser kudu when attacked.

stuntpilot2NG anthropomorphizing animal behavior makes the scientist in me cringe a little.
They did have footage of some spectacular buffalo, though.

Just more marketing and "PR". Gets more viewers and sells more cape buffalo hunts.

Steve RichardsStuntpilot2,
Well, after looking it up, I see that I anthropomorphize my guns, my dog, and occasionally even my wife.

Pretty standard fare from NG, great photography and standard anthrowhatevertizing...

though they did try to say they weren't doing that at the end.
Animals are good, people are bad - especially hunters, so on and etc...

L. David KeithWhat's causing the Buffalo to act odd is the accidental drop of CARE packages meant for Disneyland. Seems several crates of Baby Ruth candy bars fell out of a C-130 and crashed into the bush. It appears a number of old duggaboys couldn't resist the nutty goodness smell and ate all the candy bars. Now they've become just like Bears at the Smokey Mountains: "I see people, people have food (in this case Baby Ruth candy bars) I will kill people if they don't give me candy!" If only NG would look into their subjects. It would explain everything

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. Dutch44Fontana was hunting lesser kudu when charged.
Dutch
I saw this last week. A question that I don't think was answered directly was whether the Buff that killed Fontana was itself killed. At one point in the show they indicated that it was "not wounded", but don't say how they know. Does anyone know whether that bull was killed then or later?

404WJJefferyYes, good shots of big buff.
I wasn't too thrilled with the dumbed down version of programming, where they repeat the same "dramatic" footage again and again, and make the whole scenario sound on par with alien invasions and abductions.
Also noted the PH for the lady's hunt reinactment the PH and the lady were wearing blue jeans!
Also, the kudu hunter was setting up for his shot with an open sights rifle, which probably was not what he was using, and further illustrating that "accuracy" was sacrificed for "entertainment".
Maybe my friends who see the show will now think I am a real risk taker for hunting buff...when in reality my buff hunt was relatively quiet.
