While Tanzania has poaching problems the discovery of a large helium deposit will muddy the waters more !

Rift Valley extends both west and central Tanzania from south to north, geologically speaking of course. Responsible for the lakes such as Nyasa, Rukwa and Tanganyika. Also lake Natron.

Rockdoc,

This article has a photo and states in the description it was found at "Rukwa". "Scientists have confirmed a "huge" gas field at Rukwa in Tanzania's East African Rift Valley region that could help solve a global shortage of valuable helium gas".

Tanzania is probably the most unique country in the world when it comes to mineral resources in that it has a wealth and largest variety of gemstones spread over its territory, from the inexpensive Red Garnet to some of the fanciest gem-quality Diamonds.

It has some of the largest natural gas deposits in Africa as well as pockets of Uranium, Coal and Nickel.

Oil is lurking somewhere under foot and just a question of time before it is found (probably have already but keeping it under warps).

Last but not least, TZ is the 3rd largest gold producer in Africa with more and more mines opening up - this Helium discovery (likely by sheer chance) is in the vicintiy of the gold-bearing region near Chunya.

Thanks Kathi.

Rukwa also has coal deposits an a large rare earth deposit owned by Peak Resources.

As fujotupu said, it is a unique country.

Whilst drilling for coal we were also looking for uranium (and found it) and had many local offers of deposits ranging from diamonds, copper and gold. Fascinating place. Graphite is another emerging mineral there.

The Chinese seem to be land-banking projects and they are building and have built many of the roads. The roads I saw were quite good.
