A tame buffalo killed his owner this morning. It happened close to Polokwane. The farmer was busy moving waterpipes in the camp where the buffalo was kept. Nobody knows what happened, farmworkers heard his screams and went to his rescue. A neighbour tried to resucitate him but he died at the scene. The buffalo was later shot.

It is a very tragic event that took place, but again it was proven that you cannot domesticate a wild animal.

Please give us more details as they become available.

We seldom get to choose
But I've seen them go both ways
And I would rather go out in a blaze of glory
Than to slowly rot away!

This sad incident happined quite close by to our own (private game farm) which itself is situated less than 10 kms from Banderlierkop. Our ranch boundary is actually almost BANG on the Tropic of Capricorn

Mara Reasearch Station and Banderliekop villiage are towards the bottom of this pdf document link

You can click on the link and then use the ZOOM in tools if required to enlarge the map. The farm in question is somewhere in that region near the Mara Research Station

'Pet' buffalo kills owner 10/10/2005 22:15 -(SA)Marietie Louw

Polokwane - A former mayor of this city died a gruesome death at the weekend after being gored by a buffalo.

Koos Kemp, 47, died on Saturday morning at his farm Spitskop in the Mara region between Polokwane and Makhado.

Steven Fick, a friend and neighbour, said on Monday the buffalo had been hand-raised by Kemp.

"I often watched Koos feed the buffalo and saw how the animal listened to him."

Kemp was moving sprinklers in the buffalo's camp on the farm shortly after 06:00 on Saturday when the animal attacked him.

"Nobody knows what happened and why the animal reacted like that," said Fick.

"Koos started shouting, and some of the farmworkers rushed to his aid. One of the horns had gored him in the groin. He lost a lot of blood," Fick said.

Fick said he tried to resuscitate Kemp. "But we couldn't do a thing and he died on the spot."

The buffalo was later put down.
