SCI: Missing in Action?

Mike: It's been almost two decades since I had anything to do with SCI's publications, but I doubt if drop-dead deadlines set by outside suppliers, such as pre-press preparers, press schedulers, and the U.S. Post Office and overseas drop shippers have changed much. Changes could be made early in our two-month production cycle to accommodate a big donation, but it would be virtually impossible later on. Missing the later deadlines would cause later mailing dates and bring out a bunch of angry advertisers with timely ads demanding refunds.

Skyline: Elected positions are filled by volunteers who are paid only for their actual expenses. Don't know about now, but when I was in charge of the club's magazine, newspapers and record books, the club's publications were profitable.

Thanks Bill. I actually knew the elected types are volunteers and funds are for legitimate expenses. Having said that, I have been on executives and traveled to meetings. Expenses for flights, accommodations and meals add up to a staggering amount very quickly......... especially when they are utilizing high end facilities.

In any event, I still think SCI has way too many elected positions.

As for the magazine. You must have done a good job on the magazine and I am sure that is true. I also know that nowadays all print media is struggling to keep its head above water, and that postage is a killer. This is especially true with international mailings and I have had elected SCI members tell me this is indeed the case. I think this is why they seem to be slowly working towards digital issues........ I am sure they would like to drastically reduce how many issues of Safari and Safari Times they have to mail out.

All joking aside, SCI has no legitimate leadership or authenticity and hasn't for at least 15 - 20 years. It's void of character and has no compelling message.

All SCI is doing with the Cecil thing is meeting expectations. The fact that anyone would expect that they'd be relevant to the discussion is what's weird.

They lost it and haven't gotten it back and won't because followers keep paying dues to belong.
