Bushbuck Question

CrowkillerBushbuck Question
Why do bushbucks rub the hair off at the base of the neck? I've seen this on mine and many photos and mounts I've seen. Is this a scent marking procedure?

Safari-HuntMatt,
No-one really knows why they do it there is no scentglands or anything else in the neck area it could be that the rams do it when they are mature like baldness. A habit and trait.
Or it could just be the style in which bushbuck ewes loves their men.

I always try to use enough gun but then sometimes a brainshot works just as good.

L. David KeithOn rare occasions, you'll find a ram that has no hair rubbed off. As Frederik said, no one knows why they do that. I've heard many explanations but none will hold water. It is possible that Bushbuck rams may have some type of scent gland we are unaware of and are scent rubbing. After all, biologists are constantly learning new things all the time. It sure would be nice if they didn't rub off so much of their neck hair.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

CrowkillerThanks for the responses.
Fred, I like your theory about the ewes the best! LOL. My theory was that they were trying to dissuade us from shoulder mounts. It isn't working, I think it gives them character. I would have been alarmed if Fred hadn't pointed it out.
Here is mine, my best trophy picture of the bare neck:
I'm always fascinated by animal behavior, but my trip to Africa was far too short to really get to study the animals.

VlamMy theory is that it is the area where the pepper ticks congregate when they are in the bush and one of the few areas they can really scratch properly
I have seen a few old rams doing that at their favourite tree or rock. During the worst of the ticks they are often covered with them.
