As a product of another thread, I'm curious how many of you have successfully hunted rhinoceros (black or white). I made it a poll so as you may respond anonymously, but may make a comment if you wish.

So, how many of you have taken a rhino?

My vote went to killed ,it was supposed to be darted.fat fingers sorry.

I dart a rhino every other year, permits are though.

Never personally hunted one, but did get to tag along and watch a friend dart one in RSA.

No desire to.

I would like to dart either one or both, but have no desire to kill either one. The poachers are destroying them too rapidly. The funds from darting ,if used for the protection of the Rhino,will be a species saver, while leaving the animal alive.

Darted a white rhino in SA about five years ago. A lot more to it than I imagined. Very exciting..

Darted one in 06. Not much to mine. I think it's highly dependent on the outfit and probably even more so, on the terrain involved as well as how accustomed to people the animals are. In my case, we simply drove up to the animal, jumped out of the bakkie and I shot it in the hump before it ran out of range, about 40 yards. Took all of about 15 minutes to find them, then we just drove right up to them.

If you could find them in the brush, where they aren't accustomed to humans in close proximity, that might be a better deal. I paid $4,500 for this "Green Hunt". The following year, I believe it was, my Rhino pictured here, which BTW was a cow, was hunted and shot about 18 months after my "Green Hunt" and brought $78,000 in Trophy Fees. Pretty good money to roll back into conservation.

Mike, what would you consider reasonably priced?

I saw that Tam has a Black Rhino dart up on SCI's auction list, and they value it at $20K.

Half that would make me reconsider my view that if I was going after Rhino, the only thing to do was to actually kill it.

I have thought about a Rhino hunt (white) in SA or Namibia, as the Black is way too much scratch and then the US gov may well say no anyhow after you are done. The White are at least a hunt (IMO) in that you are actually completing the hunt with a kill. However, the amount they want for it would be like doing CAR/Cameroon for LDE.

I haven't decided which is a priority.

If Rhino remain open, eventually I will shoot one, but there are so many other things to hunt that sound more exciting. I do think occasionally that I should do it sooner rather than later, but when it comes time to put cash on the barrelhead, I back off.
