Hi everyone,

I have just been chatting to a PH who hunts for one of my outfitters in Tanzania. He mentioned that as of 2021 there could be a possibility Tanzania will be open year round for hunting. They should find out by the end of this month.

This might have been mentioned here already but thought I would share it with you all.

If they do that- pack your bags for Masailand and be there after the short rains and don't shoot any buffalo less than 40".

I would rather shoot an old bull that has no horns left!

Biggest I have shot was 49”.

Many in 40-46”

But I still prefer the old ones with worn horns.

Absolutely, those old bulls with worn horns are great!

Just pointing out that after the short rains is a great time for buffalo hunting in Masailand regardless of one's trophy preference- wide or old and battered or droopy... take your pick!

Would love to hunt Masailand in late March again. I know, not after the rains, but right at the beginning. Simply magical though. The buffalo poured out of Taranguire, followed by lion. You just blundered into buffalo, they were everywhere. Got stuck a lot. But would love to do that again.

True... Unless the short rains were like this past season. My son and I were in Maswa North at what was supposed to be the beginning of the short rains 6 months ago, December 1-10. We were in country 15 days and it rained, a lot, 14 of those days. Swollen rivers, couldn't hunt 80% of the concession and we were soaking wet every single day. Constantly stuck every day, used the winch over 100 times. It was a very tough hunt due to all the rain.

So, the short rains are usually OK, but not always.

The short rains are what they are: short.... but they still come with a vengeance.

I recall having given you a "heads up" on what to expect and your comments confirm what I had predicted.

I just do not like hunting in rain.

I would put up with a 100 degrees sunshine any day!

Saeed, I thought about your comments regarding hunting in the rain more than a few times on that hunt. I usually thought about what you said when I was soaking wet!

Fulvio, yes you did. However, I think what came last December was pretty unusual from the standpoint of total volume of rain. As I’m sure you know, there was widespread flooding in many areas of East Africa.

On the other hand, I’m not sure Ireland has ever been greener than what we saw in Tanzania. Big Grin

Hunting in Africa in the rain is not fun!

Even in the back of a truck on a farm in South Africa!

I did it.

But I do not wish to repeat it.

Give me the incredible heat of Chete any time.

In 2012, we were right at the beginning of the rains. Didn't actually start to rain until the end of the hunt. But got a free light show every night around the fire and heard lions every night. They seemed to answer the thunder. Only had one really bad rain/hail storm in camp. Tore up some tents. Yeah, got stuck a lot toward end, but well worth it and I'd do it again.
