Zimbabwe Denies Mugabe has Died of Heart Failure

"PA"

The Zimbabwe government today denied rumours about the supposed death of President Robert Mugabe, with a spokesman describing the 81-year-old “as fit as a teenagerâ€.

Mugabe, in power since 1980 independence, “scoffed at rumours doing rounds in Harare that he died last week following heart failure,†said the government mouthpiece, The Herald.

“I told the president that he is reportedly dead from last week as a result of heart failure. He said, ‘When did I die and where?â€â€™ Mugabe’s press secretary George Charamba told The Herald.

“He is as fit as a teenager. He is in the best of health and is at work. Those doubting can check on Thursday when he addresses Parliament,†Charamba said.

The previous week, the privately-owned weekly newspaper, The Independent, reported Mugabe had been seen going in his heavily guarded motorcade to an expensive clinic where cardiac tests were done.

The Herald linked the rumours to opposition plans to launch a nationwide strike on Thursday and Friday to protest mass arrests of street traders and demolition of “unauthorised housing,†leaving an estimated 200,000 people without shelter in midwinter cold.

The blitz has been condemned internationally. Zimbabwe’s opposition party, which has its base of support among the urban poor, says the move is aimed at driving city dwellers to rural areas where they can be controlled politically by denial of access to food as hunger grows.

President scoffs at rumours of his death

Herald Reporter

President Mugabe yesterday scoffed at rumours doing rounds in Harare that he died last week after a heart failure. Senior Government officials who attended a briefing with the President and Vice Presidents Joseph Msika and Joice Mujuru at Zimbabwe House yesterday morning said Cde Mugabe laughed off the rumours. "I told the President that he is reportedly dead from last week as a result of heart failure. He laughed and said: ‘when did I die and where?’" Secretary for Information and Publicity Cde George Charamba told The Herald. Cde Charamba said Cde Mujuru told the President that she had also heard that he died and phoned his residence only to be told that Cde Mugabe and the First Lady Cde Grace Mugabe had gone to church. He said Vice President Msika then said he wondered how a dead person could go to church, to which the President replied that a dead person is taken to church for prayers and service before burial. Cde Charamba said he received two calls yesterday from the South African media chasing the rumour of the President’s supposed ill health. "I had a briefing with the President this morning. He is as fit as a teenager. He is in the best of health and is at work. Those doubting can check on Thursday when he addresses Parliament," he said. Rumours have been doing the rounds in Harare that President Mugabe died last week of heart failure. The rumours were being spread through short messages on cellphones. But such rumours have become synonymous with plans by the opposition MDC to hold mass actions.

You want him dead? Maybe not so good, that could really put Zimbabwe over the top, Uganda, an Rwanda come to mind in the power play aftermath...Many whites in Africa refused to accpet that analogy, but Africa is Africa and that possibility always exists...

I have been told that he has structured the Gov. to his replacements, but who knows..

Imo Zimbabwes turn in the barrel is coming, how it turns out is anybodys guess, I just hope for the best...

Not to mention the bush meat market on a volume business and the ability to waste that prevails among a society that only lives one day at a time, and no thought for preservation or what will be to eat for tomarrow...The game is already in serious trouble it seems.

uncle bob is a bad guy alright, but most of the trouble is coming from all those bad guys under him. right now they all want to see him in power so that they can blame everything on him. when he goes i would expect to see a big internal struggle, but one of thos underlings will take over. This sort of stuff goes on all over the world, hell, just look at ourselves.
