The recent post by Wendell Reich featuring that incredible MONSTER Chobe Bushbuck just taken by Thor and his hunter at Munyamadzi Game Ranch has definitely gained my interests...that's an animal I would like to hunt some day for sure.

I know nothing about Zambia and hoping folks like Wendell, Thor, Mark, and Andrew could share the current situation in Zambia.

1. Property-wise where are my BEST places to hunt for my two primary/target species?
2. What makes Zambia a unique destination in regards to hunting...species/genetics?
3. What time/months/season of the year to hunt there best weather-wise for target animals?
4. I would some day like to hunt Zambia for Chobe Bushbuck and Lechwe....and a big maybe/we'll see budget-wise on a Sitatunga hunt too if I can swing it at time of booking Smiler but can all three species be found on the same properties/area or much different locales?

More and more this is looking like my perfect DREAM HUNT and genuinely hope to make it a reality!

I don't NEED or EXPECT a monster bushbuck...just to be able to HUNT a good representative of the species would be superb ...just knowing the area holds fine genetics makes it all the more worthwhile to me and the possibilities tu2

Definitely NOT interested in luxury accommodations or gourmet chefs/fine-dining... and much prefer a VERY casual/comfortable camp...not just from a financial perspective though that has a lot to do with it rotflmo but most especially for a great experience and adventure....beers and meat over the coals is fine by me tu2

And your PM's are most welcome too tu2

Thanks!

Roland

Roland,

I've taken the unique species ofered in Zambia and I would recommend two seperate areas for the three species you mentioned. You could hunt a black lechwe and sitatunga in the Bangweulu swamp and a bushbuck along the Kafue or Luangwa rivers.

The reality of hunting wild africa is that not everything can be found within a single area or even country; if it could be, then we would call it shopping rather than hunting. The term non-indigenous relates to the placing of species in an area where they do not occur naturally and is more common on african property than one might expect. Many times this information is not provided by the owner/operator. A copy of the SCI record book provides much information in this regard. You should also be aware of what constitutes free range v. estate (fenced) hunting/animals.

Likewise, some animals may be found only in very limited areas. Both the Kafue Lechwe and the Black Lechwe are among these and they do not occur together naturally. This usually, and rightly, places a premium price on these species and there is no such thing as a "budget" Sitatunga. Nor should there be, IMO.

Because you do not say which Lechwe you would like to take, Mark has given you the correct information regarding one option. However, you need to realize that the Bangweulu Swamps are a long charter air flight from the Zambia capital of Lusaka, is considered a specialized hunt, is expensive, has only a limited number of other species available and all can usually be taken within 5 days if you are lucky on the Sitatunga . Note, however, that Sitatunga are never guaranteed and can easily be hunted for 10 days without success, and oftentimes are.

If you forego the Sitatunga, you can drive from Lusaka to the Blue Lagoon or the Kafue Flats for Kafue Lechwe. Chobe Bushbuck are not particularly rare and can be found in many areas but exceptional animals are largely a matter of luck.

I am a huge fan of hunting in Zambia, although the current status is confusing. In 2004 I took a Kafue Lechwe at Blue Lagoon, chartered into the Mwanya area where I collected some world record class animals, including Bushbuck, Puku and Lion, and then flew into the Bangweulu where I collected those unique species that occur there. That 21 day safari included 4 charter flights and could not be classified as a budget hunt by any estimation.

I hope this helps and wish you the best of luck, but you have a lot of research, planning and decision making in front of you.

I hunted with Thor on the same camp that you read about

I went August and the grass / vegetation were low and stalking becomes challenging.

I wanted to stalk as close as possible and taking long shots was not my cup of tea

I would suggest contact Thor directly and book late April / May

what make this place special for bush buck ?

Well have a look at this pano I took of his camp

Much appreciated Mike!

And me being one of most modest income but still wanting to enjoy another African hunt..I need to rule out the specialized Bangweulu hunt and expensive charter!

Good info and just the type of details II need to prepare/study for what may suit me the best considering my budget constraints tu2

And yes Mike I got a lot of RESEARCH ahead of me and time is on my side...If you have anymore to share...please PM me it would be much appreciated!

I'm going to use our AR Hunt reports as my basis and google everything I can find out about what outfitters offer what Big Grin

I was particularly interested in the Red Lechwe [Kafue?] to clarify rather than Black.

Free-range/indigenous animals is very important to me...

Thanks again!

Your dream safari would be Bushbuck and Lechwe with Thor in Luangwa/Kafue Flats in July/August. Take a Puku and maybe he can tempt you with some of his oversized Kudu.

Sitatunga is expensive and incurs a separate safari mate.

What fairgame describes, I call heaven! Wink The Garden of Eden must surely have been located somewhere in the Luangwa Valley along the river shore! Cool

This would mean the world to me...the picturesque beauty of it all whether I bagged my game or not...just the privilege of hunting with Thor and his team...hunting hard and sharing camp with them...the experience of it all is the alluring grandeur of why I seek a true african safari.

No pressure, but to soak in the experience and enjoying the people is worth every penny I can save to make this happen!

Thank you gents for getting me sorted!

Cheers!

I was amazed at the Kudu quality there. Best Kudu I have seen outside of Clive's ranch in the Kalahari.

I hunted sitatunga in the bangweulu with pete swanepoel jnr and few years ago and to save money drove up there from Lusaka with him rather than take a chartered fight. It was a great way to see more of Africa rather than just fly in, shoot and fly out which is what most people do when hunting the lechwe up there.

I'd hunt with (and plan to) pete again. Have a look at his website. Safaribwana.com

Ask him if it would be easier for me to hunt the Kafue Lechwe with you. As it is on my doorstep? Sort of split the hunt with 2 PH's.

This photo is of a 21 inch Chobe and used to hang on the dining room wall at Munyamadzi.

Petes a good bugger alright, I'm trying to get him out here for a hunt and take him to a rugby game (I'm only 15 minutes from waikato stadium). My dream is to hunt buffalo with him again one day soon.

Agree with Andrew it might be easiest if he does does the Lechwe with you as they are his end of the country!

Hi Thor,

Sounds good. Looks like Roland should do a week with you and try and interest him in some of those big Kudu and maybe a Puku on top of his bushbuck.

Classic comment on the end of that video of yours.

The Luangwa is very scenic and the Kafue Flats quite surreal.
