Amazon has a series of books written by Ron Thomson, a game ranger and PH from Rhodesia in the sixties. Does anyone know, or have an opinion of him. If you have negative opinions, please don't vent, or be obnoxious. Thanks, captdavid

I have two of his--"Mahohboh" and "The Adventures of Shadrek" that I read some time ago. My memory is that both are good reads but not among my all time favorites.

I read all his books. He was a game warden that did a lot of problem animal control. I enjoyed his books immensely. He started of as a young warden in the Matoppos. he moved on to Wankie, then Gonarezou. Try and read his books in sequence. I think he is knowledgeable and the real deal.I have a friend that visits him once a year in Plet when they go on holiday. I recommend his book. I have Months of the sun of Ian Nyschen. I rate him in the same class.

Nyschen was a one-of-kind guy. Months of the Sun is a revelatory trip through the mind of a very complicated person. He even admits difficulty in reconciling his own actions. I like Thomson for his overall perspective and experience.

Not many people alive who have shot over 5000 elephant, many of them bulls on problem animal control..If you ever think of hunting elephant, get his book Mahoboh. He is fascinating to talk to, and lived a life in the African bush that is no longer possible. He is the real deal

I've got Mahohboh and Adventures of Shadrek. I liked them both. Mahohboh especially was a really good elephant book.

I'd like to read some of his other books, but haven't yet. They're available on Kindle too, if you like that.

Ron is the real deal and all of his books are outstanding. When folks like Richard Harland tell you Ron is the real deal, you can be assured that is the case. Insofar as his books are concerned, I would go so far as to say that among all the books on Africa I have read . . . and that would be hundreds . . . his are among the very best and his are some of the books I most enjoy.

I have had the privilege of spending a weekend in the APNR with Ron many years ago.

A true independent thinker with a very good mind and lots of practical bush knowledge. Very active in conservation publication and calls a spade a spade.

Google the True Green Alliance.

Like Mike said, the real deal.

Ron Thomson is one of the great names in southern African conservation and comes from a family of Rhodesian conservationists. I am re-reading his book "Mahohbo" at the moment. He has a couple of lifetimes' worth of experience and writes well.

His True Green Alliance is the only well thought-out, out of the box concept to counter the insidious machinations of the greenies to be put on the table in a long while.

African Hunter magazine published its manifesto in, I think, Issue 107.

Ron Thomson is worth reading and listening to.

Yes, Ron Thompson is one of the best game rangers in the golden era in Rhodesia. He is extremely knowledgeable regarding conservation and hunting , especially Dangerous Game hunting. Another Legend you can read about is Richard Harland, he is a living legend when it comes to hunting/culling/killing dangerous game like elephant and buffalo as well as plains game..this sounds strange..Richard Harland was appointed to kill all tsetse fly carriers like buffalo, elephant, warthog ect on sight in the corridor area of Rhodesia during the 1960 `s.
His books : The Hunting Imperative, Ndlovu and African Epic is great to read. He was the only person I knew of who would run into the middle of an elephant herd, shoot the leader, run up the dead leader`s leg to get and elevated spot and start killing the whole herd...since that was his task assigned to him.
You will read about the .458 Mannlicher Schoenauer rifle he used as well and shot well over six thousand elephants with it...he had a tracker with him who was skilled in shooting elephant as well and they really made a great extermination team...you really will find these books fascinating...

Mr. Thomson lives on the eastern cape, my wife and i had the pleasure of spending an afternoon at his house a couple years ago. It is amazing to talk to a living person with the experience that he has had in wildlife management. (How many people have you ever talked to that have shot 5000 elephants?)
I purchased my first Ron Thomson book directly from him - Mahohboh! and i believe i have since read all of his work.
Like most of us Mr. Thomson has strong opinions, most of which i agree with. I highly recommend both his library of work and the True Green Alliance, with which he is affiliated.

From another perspective, you can't write anything negative because there is none
Read some of his books and it is simply great reading
After reading Shadrek and personally hunted same areas, it put that bit of experience into a real time

Spent some time with Ron late last year. Incredible man and a wealth of knowledge. Some attempt should definitely be made to record many of his experiences and capture all that knowledge.
