Shameful. I've often wondered how far latter day revisionists consider suficient. Consider S.A.
While it is easy for the ANC and the rest of the world to target whties due to obvious racial differences and well documented colonial events, if displacing them and restoring "black rule" is politically correct why isn't going a century or two farther and displacing non-Sans or Zulu peoples equally acceptable?

If he wants to do something about some one that has persecuted his people and stolen their wealth, maybe he should try to remove Mugabe...

I hate to say this, but you guys need to read your history books. Rhodes is hardly the hero that you think he is! See the discussion on the Boer War, for example. The Boers date the start of the war to the Jameson Raid, organized by guess who..., your hero, Rhodes! Let's see what our RSA and Zim friends have to say about Rhodes. I will bow to their insights.
I assume that most of the tourists that visit the Rhodes grave site are white?

I do know my history and it is replete with accomplishments of Livingston, Rhodes, Selous, Pretorius, Corbett, as well as a myriad of others. History is replete with the trials and travails but honest men don't attempt to rewrite it or whitewash it. Mistakes are made and we learn and move on.

I would be interested in knowing what Mr. Mathema's heroes accomplished aside from genocide. Unfortunately I doubt that he can point to many who did anything but enslave their own people and retarded the growth and advancement of civilization. Just my 2 cents.

Here is what he would think of that:

The Rhodes Scholarships were established after the death of Cecil Rhodes, who dreamed of improving the world through the diffusion of leaders motivated to serve their contemporaries, trained in the contemplative life of the mind, and broadened by their acquaintance with one another and by their exposure to cultures different from their own. Mr. Rhodes hoped that his plan of bringing able students from throughout the English-speaking world and beyond to study at Oxford University would aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Each year, 32 U. S. citizens are among more than 80 Rhodes Scholars worldwide who take up degree courses at Oxford University. The first American Rhodes Scholars entered Oxford in 1904.

Mr. Rhodes’ Will contains four criteria by which prospective Rhodes Scholars are to be selected:

1. literary and scholastic attainments;
2. energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports;
3. truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
4. moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.
Along with the names you mentioned are also Hubble and Van der Graff. I did not see Gingrich, Cheney or Ron Paul's names mentioned.
Peter.

I wonder why Clinton is called a Rhodes' Scholar ?? While he was eligible he never completed the schooling .Instead he spent his time in Europe planning and conducting anti-American demonstrations there . thumbdown

It's sad that they always need someone to blame for their failures.

When the remains of CJR and Livingstones Statue are gone who will they blame.

Do they want Chaka or Mzilikazi back?

My dear friend, If you have read both the article and my previous post it is hoped you will understand I at least am not glorifying Rhodes nor colonialism.
Colonialism is not uniques to Africa. Even the United States were once a British colony! We don't hear them blaming their shortcomings on England though.
Blaming the country's lack of rain on Rhodes' corpse buried on a mountain? ...and we make fun of Al Gore's climatalogical theories!
As someone else pointed out, Zim (and it's people, white and black) surely hasn't suffered any more for one man's vanity than for it's present ruler.
All African regions have had a succession of rulers or ruling peoples since time began. The same could be said of all regions of the world in fact. Setting some arbitrary point to recognize who is the just people to rule is as absurd as ignoring them!
It may be a nasty busines but at least until very recently, who got to rule equaled who had conquered a particular spot on earth. In most of Africa this is still the way. "history books" there are still being written... and re-written.

Cecil Rhodes, good or bad, is a part of Zimbabwe's history. However, as we all know, history is continually re-written to serve the needs of the present. I daresay that the history we all "know" usually happens to be congruent with our own personal values. Just coincidence I guess.

I suspect there is some current agitation amongst the population that requires a distraction.

While we are on the subject of these evil colonising swines, surely it is time that the Italians were made to pay for what the Romans did all over the place. Denmark should also pay Britain back for all the theft the Vikings commited. The French should pay for William the Conqueror's murder of an English king. I should imagine that the International Court of Justice could be busy for a while. Big Grin Cool
