baboon,

my quote for a crate weighing 492lbs was $1150 for air and $650 sea for delivery into Houston.

Bwanahile,

You had like 11 shoulder mounts did'nt you?

I've got a full body baboon, half gemsbok, shoulder mount waterbuck, full mount steenbuck and two warthog skulls plus backskins. I'm thinking the gemsbok half mount will make for a very oversized crate.making me think I need to go sea freight.

That is so strange that there is not a bigger difference in price for shipping by sea versus air.

A #500 crate say 4 feet on a side is a significant weight and bulk in an aircraft's hold but it is a pinpoint in a ship's hold.

The handling costs of loading and unloading should be less for the ship because you have more hand labor loading aircraft and the differences for fuel expended etc. should be significantly less for the sea trip also.

I had a large shipment a bit ago, 15 animals including a lifesize croc. Took about 1/3 of a semi trailer. anyway it cost about 3000 on ship and 9000 on air. Took just 1 month to get here, arrived in excellent shape. One more thing though, on ship there is also a docking fee charged. make sure that is included in the quote

baboon,

yes, 11 shoulder mounts and 2 rugs. I am using Lynette at ABX logistics. butchloc alludes to the docking fees associated with sea shipments. As he mentioned, make sure you find out about all of those charges. Lynette indicated to me that these can add up fast!
