Going on my first African safari next week, will be hunting buffalo. Bringing my 470 DR and 375 with scope. Want to shoot my first buff with DR, but if I see a really good one 125 yards off will use my scoped rifle. Should I expect the guide to have someone to carry the second rifle? I really don't know. He is in Africa on a lion hunt now and I can't get in touch with him. thanks george

It is not uncommon to have someone along to carry it, usually a tracker, but put some thought into this. First, don't load the gun that the tracker will carry! Second, figure which gun you would not mind getting damaged and let him carry that one. The Tracker never touched my double unless it was absolutely necessary. Yes, they are usually reasonably careful, but ... just be wise about it. Good luck. We look foreward to pictures.

One of the tracker should be able to carry a spare rifle for you. If the extra rifle is a safe queen keep in mind that it may get a few scratches and dings on it...and if the shit hits the fan(charge or something) it will be thrown on the ground in a second! Good luck on your hunt. BTW I think you are making a wise choice taking a scoped rifle along with your double. ****************************************************************** R. On my buff hunt last year I carried my .470 NE Double Rifle and one of the trackers carried the .375 H&H. No problem as I see it.

Don't think that you'll only use the .375 at 125 yards. Sometime buffalo will be in dark shadow or heavy brush and you might well use a scope to better pick a spot... even at 50 yards. I'd make sure the .375 had a sling. The tracker (actually, most likely the assistant tracker) will not be swinging the muzzle around everywhere if it's hung on his shoulder. Make sure you give him a few extra bucks tip for toting the freight... and if you remember, one guy here was tracking elephant and ran across a wonderful sable took it when the elephants turned out to be all cows. BTW, I'm having Butch Searcy build me a "Classic" in .400 Jeffery with a QD scope mount for the above stated reasons. The best of both worlds? Searcy Classic Picture What a pretty thing! One of the trackers always carried either my 416 or 470 DR. The M70 was always unloaded with 3 downn, the double being a Krieghoff was always loaded and uncocked. Never a problem. It was obvious the tracker was proud to carry my weapons and took very good care of them. Jim "Bwana Umfundi" NRA
