After killing of lion, Mugabe says Zimbabweans must protect resources from foreign 'vandals'

The Associated Press

Mugabe, in his first public comments about the popular lion named Cecil, says his compatriots failed in their responsibility to protect the lion that was killed by an American in an allegedly illegal hunt.

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Zimbabweans failed in their responsibility to protect a popular lion named Cecil that was killed by an American in an allegedly illegal hunt, President Robert Mugabe said Monday.

In his first public comments about the lion, Mugabe said Zimbabweans should protect their natural resources from what he called foreign vandals.

"All the natural resources are yours. Even Cecil the lion is yours. He is dead but yours to protect, and you failed to protect him," Mugabe said in a televised speech marking Heroes' Day, a national holiday honoring fighters who died in the war to end white minority rule.

"There are vandals who come from all over. Some maybe just ordinary visitors, but there are others who want to vandalize, to irregularly and illegally acquire part of those resources," Mugabe said.

"All this wildlife is yours, we should protect them," he said. "They should not be shot by a gun, it's a sin. Or an arrow. I was stopped from killing animals with an arrow when I was seven or eight years old. I was told: 'These are God's creatures.'"

Zimbabwe has a legal hunting industry, though wildlife officials said James Walter Palmer, the American who killed Cecil, did not have authorization for the hunt.

A Zimbabwean Cabinet minister has called for the extradition of Palmer, who says he relied on his professional guides to ensure the hunt was legal.

Two Zimbabweans — a professional hunter and a farm owner — have been charged in Cecil's killing.

You weren't too concerned about 'God's creatures' when you served baby elephant and crocodile to your guests at your 91st. birthday party, and received an entire stuffed male lion as one of your birthday presents.

Do not be surprised if these are the opening salvos to end hunting in Zimbabwe. Anti-hunting forces got to the leadership of Kenya and Botswana. Who says Bobby Mu is not immune from being money whipped into submission?

Fire away.

Of course, the Chinese who so generously give money to Uncle Bob are not to be classified as "foreign vandals!"

China pledges $2 million to curb poaching in Zimbabwe
AFP
August 6, 2015 2:46 PM

Harare (AFP) - China, which is accused of fuelling the trade in elephant ivory and rhino horn, on Thursday pledged equipment worth $2 million to curb poaching in Zimbabwe.

The funding came after Zimbabwe's wildlife became the focus of global attention with the killing of Cecil the lion, a well-known animal among tourists, by an American trophy hunter.

"By providing equipment for wildlife protection, China is willing to cooperate with our Zimbabwe friends to ensure that all of Africa's wildlife can survive," Chinese ambassador Lin Lin said at a news conference in Harare.

The equipment will include all-terrain vehicles, tents, telescopes, mobile radio sets and GPS tracking devices, Lin said.

China attracted criticism last month after importing 24 elephant calves from Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwean authorities have defended the sale as a measure to raise funds for conservation, saying the country has too many elephants.

Poaching is a major problem in Zimbabwe with the parks and wildlife authority operating on a scant budget and often appealing for donations.

Last year, poachers killed scores of elephants after poisoning the environs of their watering holes in Hwange national park.

Early in July, Cecil the lion was killed outside Hwange park by US trophy hunter Walter Palmer using a bow and arrow.

The hunt provoked worldwide outrage after it emerged that Cecil was a well-known attraction at the park and was wearing a tracking collar as part of an Oxford University research project.

Rhino horn is prized in China for its supposed medicinal properties, while elephant ivory is highly valued in artworks or jewellery.

I think a lot of black citizens will now be looking at anyone white with a new suspicion and the possibility of violence against them thanks to Uncle Bob new statements. Normally the average black citizen would not pay much attention to traveling white hunters, but the odds have gone up a tick for sure. If going to Zim in the near future I think I would limit my activities to the hunt only with a competent PH. No sightseeing, visiting other venues etc. Just my thoughts.

Idiotic as it sounds, I don't think that Mugabe gives a shit about hunters dollars...look at what he did to every other money-making industry in Zimbabwe.

He knows that Whitey is making money off of sport hunting, so the fact that the dollars are helping blacks too doesn't matter to him.

If the anti's secretly begin to pay him off, sport hunting is done.
