So what's the latest on Botswana? Are they still closing down the Okavango? Anything on lion? Just wondering.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

According to Greg Butler, 2009 will be the last year in the Delta. He was not sure what was to happen in his other areas after 2010.

I've heard from a couple of other people that operate in the Delta that hunting there is pretty much finished.

I think some of those guys are apparently moving into Moz to esablish new hunting areas.

Even still from what I understand they got good money for their concessions when they packed up in the Delta.

Brett,

I don't know that any of us had a crystal ball that will show us the future of African hunting but from talking to operators it would seem that the Okavango is done as far as hunting goes. Elephant and ranch hunting seems to be on solid ground in the remaining areas of the country but the rest including lion are finished or on the way out.

My son and I are booked for a Buff and Lechwe hunt with Calitz for 2011 in the Delta. At Dallas in Jan. they were planning, hoping that they would be able to hunt until their concession permit expired after 2011. They were very upfront about the possibility that they could be shut down sooner or have their quota reduced. They thought that the Buff quota would be fine if they still had the concession, but were worried about the plains game quotas as their quotas were reduced this year. I knew it was a gamble when I booked, but what the hell it is the last chance to hunt one of Africa's greatest game areas. I hope it works out in the end. We also have Ele booked so hopefully it will be Bots in 2011 no matter what.
