Has anyone used 500 grain .458 Protected Points made by Woodleigh on Cape Buff?
I was looking at running them out of my .458 win mag.
Observations and suggestions appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Stu

I haven't used them in 458, but have used them in my 500 - and they're very good indeed.....

I've also had clients use them in 458 and other calibres, and I've never seen one perform badly.

Woodleighs do tend to be speed sensitive though, so make sure you keep to the speed restrictions printed on the box.........

Cheers Steve
Woodleigh state the PP open a little slower than the round nose, which some say is a little soft. The PP's shoot realy well for me and at the classic 2150 fps are well within the suggested impact velocities (1800 fps - 2300 fps).

Stu,

They're quite right in that statement. I use the SP on cats and they expand brilliantly and I use the PSP on Buff etc and they also perform brilliantly. I wouldn't say the SP is too soft, I'd say it's perfect for a particular use and the same could be said of the PSP - but a different particular use.

I have on occasion, used the SP to administer the coup de grace on Buff at very close range - maybe a yard or so, and they expand to around an inch or maybe a bit more, and they stay in the body, so they're perfect for that purpose as well.

Many thanks Steve.
Do you shoot the woodleigh solids too? I would be interested in the fall of shot between the PP's and the solids.
I need to start working up some loads for the solids soon.
Dam I love this stuff!!

Hi Stu,

I use the GS Custom flat nose mono solids as I just love 'em to bits. I'm not a fan on FMJ solids (unless in double rifles) and have seen most of them fail occasionally over they years -but of the FMJs, I'd rate the Woodleigh as one of the very best.

I've worked out loads for both my 500 and my 404 that give me the same POI on both Woodleighs and the GS Custom.

I have used all the types of Woodleighs in calibers 9.3, 375, 404, 470 and found that they all generally shoot same point of impact, the round nose soft and solids great in 470 with protected points a bit stronger.
I would think the 500grn Protected points and solids in 458WIN would be ideal for Buffalo.
