If you are wanting buffalo and a good assortment of plains game I would look at the delta coutadas..C11, C10, C14 and C12 probably in that order. Mashambanzou also has good areas closer to Beira and east of Gorongosa but not the overall density of game as in the delta.

Up in the Tete Province Simon Roger has the best area with the most buffalo but plains game selection is not as good as the above areas. Good lion and leopard in Simons area as well.

Coutada 9 has been improving for the past 10 + years and offers excellent hunting for spiral horned antelope, especially kudu also sable, Lich. Harebeest, reedbuck and others. Only one lion permit for the coutada but they take an exceptionl lion each year..an elephant or 2 each year as well.

Niassa in the north is generally a good big 4 area with not all areas having buffalo and elephant poaching a problem in most areas..some worse than others. Add good sable, exceptional eland, hartebeest, niassa wildebeest and a few others.

Also some good, but smaller, areas in the south bordering Kruger and Gonarezou.

Docbill - Send me a PM with e-mail address and some specific questions and I will be glad to provide some info. I have hunted Moz four times now, have a good outfitter/PH there. Have taken Leopard, Croc, Hippo, Sable, Eland Duiker, Bushbuck, Buffalo (3), Baboon, Suni, Hartebeest with this outfitter/PH. A great place to hunt, more OLD AFRICA, than a lot of other places. Have pics if you like also.

I have been there twice, once in 2002 and then again this year. Buffalo? Jeez that guy has got Buffalo! Good Buffalo too. Seems to do very well o his cats. Guy in camp shot a Lion on the 3rd (4th maybe?) day of his hunt. Still had one roaring every night close to camp.

PG opportunities are decent. Great Bushbuck, pretty darn good Kudu too. It's a good area for Sable. 40" ain't a stretch there. Roan too, if they ever get it opened up again.

Very good Hippo and Croc area and has to be the nicest camps I have been in all over Southern and East Africa.

A solid choice with quality animals.

I hunted with Zambeze Delta Safaris in October of last year. Took 16 different animals from Buff and croc down to blue duiker. For someone that wants to see a diversity of wildlife this is certainly one of the best. Flying in and out was uneventful and my trophies arrived back to the states in late October of this year. They will have a booth at DSC.

I hunted Coutada 14 in Oct 2012. Took two buffalo and a sable. I chose Moz and 14 for the ease and cost of buffalo. I can gladly recommend coutada 14 in late season for dry conditions and very little minor wadding. The bufs were 43" and 37". I hunted with NB Safaris out of SA. I'm affraid I wouldn't recommend them, but Debbie Vissor runs a good camp and finds good buf.

Coutada 10 and Marromeu Safaris because i hunted there and never saw so many buffalos in all my hunting life, operator is top notch and prices compared with other similar operators in the area , which i consider the best in Moz for buffalo, sable and other plainsgame, are better.
Cheers

I'd second the recommendation for Zambezi Delta Safaris. Have hunted Coutada 11 twice now, lots of buffalo, plenty of plains game and small ones, great shot at getting a good nyala too. Also a great diversity of terrain, everything from swamps to forest to savannah.

I do hear Moz is a great destination for the price, as long as you get the right outfitter. Otherwise, it can be a nightmare. Listen to the guys with good hunts there. I'd love to go one day.

Good luck and happy hunting.

Zambezi Delta Safaris. I've hunted with the Haldane brothers twice. They now control Coutada 11 & 12 and conduct very good hunts for all game.

The Sabie Game Reserve located in the South of Mozambique is a Dangerous game paradise. Its located just East of the Greater Kruger border. The big 5 can all be found within the area all in strong numbers except Rhino. The Buffalo numbers and quality are par with almost any area in Africa. Leopard numbers are good with the chance of taking a giant always present. We personally had a client take a Leopard that weighed in at 176lbs. with a 17 7/8 skull. Plains game numbers are good with a decent variety available. The down side to Sabie is the lack of rare species that you will find in Coutada 10, 11, 12 and the Niassa. The other being Sabie daily rates are also higher than the other areas mentioned.

Coutada 10 is a great area that I personally hunted in August (If I get some time I will do a full report this week on the hunt). Buffalo, Hippo, Elephant, Croc, Leopard and some Lions can all be found in the area. The Buffalo can be hunted in one of two ways in the area, first being traditional tracking and the second being going into the delta with Argos. The Argo is definitely a unique twist to buffalo hunting! The big draw to me in hunting this area of Mozambique is the little guys. Red Duiker, Blue Duiker, Grey Duiker, Suni and Oribi are all found in strong numbers. Calling Duikers is something every African hunter has to try once! The Camps in Coutada 10 are in top-notch shape as is the service. They’re are a couple of things you need to know before doing this hunt, first if you wish to hunt Crocs out of the boats you have to be there during the correct tidal flows, which limits your available dates. The other down side can be the heat/humidity but you can plan your hunt around that if you desire. Overall I believe the delta hunts provide you a great experience to see and hunt “Wild Africa” for a reasonable price.

In conclusion Mozambique has so many different options that I think you need to sit back and ask yourself, “ What experience do I want and what are my primary species?” I'm sure everyone here will steer you in the right direction.

I hunted Coutada 9 last August specifically for monster warthog, which I got. The Duckworth's of Mokore have done a great job there and the lodging & food are 1st rate. Large amts. of BIG kudu and many other antelope species. Buff are being introduced at present. We saw a huge dark maned lion and quite a few elephant. My wife & I had a superb experience, very safe & easy to get to & from by vehicle. We chose here also b/c we didn't want to hunt in water or swamps, huge concession, good roads, no fences.

I have had the pleasure of taking six buffalo, an old lion and numerous plains game over there whilst spending around a total of half a year in time during the past several years, particularly in the north of the country. Nice place indeed.

Erik- is that Marromeu Safaris in Coutada 10 you are speaking of? Sounds great especially the small stuff!

If one is looking for a good Hippo and Croc hunt, Carel Maartens of Chewalo Safaris is GREAT and BIG critters, lots of them!! He has great bushbuck and access to other Big 5 game across the river. He hunts on the Zambezi near Zumbo and that is really Dark Africa. I really enjoyed my hunt with him...REMEMBER right now you cannot Export Hippo as Mozi failed to file proper CITES papers for 2013 and they were shutdown! Elephant never could be exported, Roan is not open yet.
I will go back again, had a great visit to Maputo in March, cruising. Unfortunately the Renamo are kicking up the dust again now. So watch for travel warnings.

Cheers,

Having hunted most areas in Mozambique I would recommend Simon Rodger's area close to the Zim Border for excellent buffalo ,Sable, croc and hippo. Plainsgame ,lion and leopard are average.
The areas in the Delta have good plainsgame and plenty of buffalo however hunting in the swamp conditions can be trying and buffalo quality average.
Coutada 9 offers excellent Sable,Nyala plainsgame hunting ,the area has a large variety of game and exceptional quality on all the spiral horned animals .Lion numbers limited yet 100% success rate and very good quality.
Buffalo numbers limited at present, clients can upgrade hunts if they shoot a buffalo in this area.

All 3 areas mentioned have well run camp so choose area depending on what's on your wish list. Prices vary slightly between area which is another thing to consider.

Best areas and operators in Moz in my opinion and i quite know well a lot of areas and operators

Buffalo & Plainsgame

Marromeu Safaris - coutada 10
Zambeze Delta Safaris - coutada 11 and 12

In my opinion these delta coutadas in the Marromeu complex ate by far and without any doubt IMO , the best concessions in all Moz for buf plus plainsgame - dont doubt it.
The first two operators are having the best camps and service .
Coutada 14 is obviously also excellent for hunting but camp condition and ....are not at all of the same quality of the first ones mentioned.
No lion on quota and very few elephant .
You have buffalo in the swamps which is an extraordinary experience BUT you will also find in the forest depending on the way you like to have your experience .
I personally hunted coutada 10 and it is simply amazing in all aspects of the hunt.

Save Safaris / Mokore safaris
Coutada 9
Very good for plainsgame , very few buffalo , very good for cats , camps and service are also top.
One of the best operators in Mozambique , impossible to go wrong.

Mc Donald pro hunting
Sabie game park

Very good for everything BUT hunting concession is very small .
Although there is resident game , oportunitites coming froming the park are the common way of hunting especially for lion. Excellent service and camps , a top operator and a very good area although spending 10 days in such a small area can be boring in my opinion.

Niassa Reserve
Calitz Safaris
Lwire Safaris
Kambaco Safaris

The 3 best operators in Niassa all of them covering the whole south of the reserve.
You will not see a lot of game like in the marromeu complex or coutada 9 , but you will shot 100 % sure exceptional plainsgame , very good buffalo and very good cats ......elephant i consider to be scarce to say the least.
Excellent camps , excelent Phs , excelent service , top notch operators.
I just dont know what is happening to Kambaco for the next year , as i heard they have been raded by the special forces with few things confiscated but i am not updated on last news and i hope all is well.

Safaris de Mocambique - Simon Rodger

Tete province
Excellent area for crocodile and hippo but hippo is closed for export at this moment.
Good for cats and plainsgame, very good for buffalo and nice cats are shot every year - they are holding the biggest quota for cats in Mozambique.
Astonishing camp , excellent service , big area along the Cabora Bassa , fishing is a must.

Obviously there are other good operators but again , IMO , these companies are BY FAR the best ones in Moz and with each one of them i am 100% you will have a memorable safari.

I hope this to be of your help,
Cheers and have a good day.

Welcome to AR and thanks for the update Neil. Keep us posted on the proposed buffalo reintro and any other developments in C9/C13.

Not sure if he will have buffalo next year or not but probably

I was there for PG late September and took a really nice Licht Hartebeast, 2 Patterson eland black bulls one was 38 1/2 x 37 1/2 with 12 3/4 bases. And 2 Roosevelt sable over 40". One was 42 1/2 x 42 with 10 1/2 bases and the other 41 x 41 with 9 3/4 bases

I will put a hunting report with pics up in a day or so.

i hunted Coutada 10 a few yours ago when Johan Streisham( Bahati Adventures) had it. the most common plains game were sable! plenty of other stuff as well( eland, Lich hartebeest, reedbuck, etc.). although we didn't go into the swamps for buff, no shortage of hippo/croc in the same general area, lots of the small stuff( red duiker, wart hogs, bush pigs in broad daylight, etc).

Thanks Cave Dog..we look forward to your report. With regards to buffalo..will they be in the existing Moz concession or are they acquiring a new area?

I don't think Guy and his partner have their concession fully explored to know what all they have but the neighboring concession does have buffalo that are quite nice and u believe they can make arrangements for their hunters to hunt buffalo there on a case by case basis

I hunted same camp as Michael Robinson in his report maybe 1-2 weeks later

Messalo and Nungo together they have 2 buffalo on quota - for me it says all about density of buffalo in those 2 areas .
i am not saying it is a bad area ( i never hunted there , only close ) , what i am saying is that it is not ''the area'' for buffalo.
cheers
