This go-round, Philip Dixie (PH) had three sticks inserted in a metal, pre-manufactured harness/yoke with a U-shaped "saddle" having Tygon tubing slid over each side for cushion. Actually, he had two of these set up, and I can't find them anywhere online. Very handy because they rode securely in the Toyota's frame just behind the cab. an

Anyone seen 'em before?

Sounds a bit like the yoke in my Ultrec shooting sticks. You may want to check their web site.

Nice. This was way more basic -- add your own legs. Just the hardware "tree" with three fold-down / pivots and the U-shaped yoke above.

Barry,

I made my own after using Eardley's during our second trip to Blaauwkrantz, pretty easy to make. I cut the bracket that holds the legs from a square of 16 gauge metal I bought at Home Depot and the "yoke" I made from a 1/4" rod, formed it around a piece of 1 1/2" pipe and welded it to a 3/8" bolt as an attachment. The hardest part was drawing the bracket in the "flat" status and drew, cut out and folded pieces of thin cardboard before I got it right.

What ever happened to the tree, stump, termite mound, PH's shoulder, sling or whatever other means of natural support?

Nowadays its gone to the levels of bi-pods, tripods, quadri-pods, yokes, kevlar, Tygon tubing, etc. etc.

The eccentrics will next be invoking the engineers at NASA to invent a set of sticks that will fold to pocket-size and weigh less than 6ozs.

Wow! I wonder if they had someone at PHASA or whatever making them locally. Could be a do-it-yourself transet tripod, something intended for other use, just modified a bit. That's a bunch of work!

Still have three push broom legs with a vacuum cleaner belt around mine.

Drilled nut 1/4" x 3 sides, tapped to 5/16" for three 1 1/4" bolts through broomstick handles. Replaced monopod Y-yoke with 1/4-20 brass bolt with Tygon tubing surround. Added a few washers--it was fun!

How very true. I never used a clumsy stick and never will, except a short stick which I push into a pocket. Just read the following, I do it like Georg Dedek. Well I‘m not using an umbrella but a very short stick purchased in Germany.

BARON IN AFRICA by Brian Marsh:

"Georg (Dedek) always hunted in a “Kenya-style” safari jacket, a loose-fitting, sleeveless garment with cartridge loops across the breasts and four large pockets down the front. When about to shoot, Georg would thrust the tip of the closed umbrella into the bottom left-hand pocket of his jacket, and shooting from the right shoulder, would rest his rifle on the umbrella’s handle, which gave him a steady rest."
