I am sure this has been covered here before. Can one take two rifles and shotgun (O/U) in to RSA for safari? Thanks

This is an airline issue. Call your airline and see what they say. You hear all the 2-gun limit stuff but as far as I know it is the airline calling the shots. ------------------------------- Will / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. This is off the PHASA web site: 2. The following firearms and ammunition will not be allowed to enter South Africa: • Any automatic or semi-automatic firearms, • More than one firearm per calibre per person, • More than 200 rounds of ammunition per person per firearm, • Any pistol or revolver. I may be mistaken, but I think he's asking if he can take two combination guns,rifle/shotgun O/U, or maybe one rifle, and one combo! If that is the case the airlines will not know the difference, and the only ones who might object are the officials where he is going, if one of them is a switch barrel! In the case of a switch barrel the extra set of barrels is considered another gun, in some places. Now that I've confused the issue, I'll listen! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

I was told it was 2 firearms, not of the same caliber...PERIOD. But I'd continue checking if you're determined to get all 3 in. Gary

Hi There Die ou Jagter, I do not think it will be a problem , just tlet your outfitter get written permission from CFR (Central Friearms Rgeister ) before the time My main concern would be are you taking amo for the 20 with or not ? 20 Gauge ammo could be problematic in South Africa at stages, as sometimes no avialibilty at all, once again let your outfitter confirm avail and remeber if he does not own a 20 , he can not buy the ammmo, only you can with your temporary license Personal suggestion is take a 12 , ammo is plentifull All the best and enjoy Walter Enslin kwansafaris@mweb.co.za DRSS- 500NE Sabatti 450 Rigby 416 Rigby

Herr Jaeger I spoke with Air2000 about this issue. They told me that there is no limit to the number of firearms one can bring, as long as they are of different calibers BUT as a practical matter, any more than 2 rifles and one shotgun would raise issues, even though the law technically allows it. So I think you are fine with SAPS. The airlines- I have actually checked 2 rifle cases on two occassions, expecting to pay more or maybe be denied, but no questions and no extra money. I do think the biggest hurdle for you is the one rifle case rule, with a limit of two firearms per case, as some airlines specify. Whether they enforce it or not is pot luck. I have taken a shotgun on two trips, and sorta wondered why I bothered. Both times the PH had a shotgun, and I didn't really need mine. I am not, however, much of a bird shooter, so I can understand if you want to have your shotgun with you. Don't know if this helps much- but at least I didn't bitch about the question! ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866

I have taken two rifles and a shotgun to SA and Zimbabwe. I won't do that again. Too many hassles on this end but absolutely none once in Africa. Plus who needs to carry the extra weight and pay the excess baggage charges. Remember most airlines do not allow three guns in the same case. Unless you are "married" to your shotgun, borrow/rent/steal one from your PH and whatever you do buy the shells over there. All IMO FWIW

Ed, with the tuff pak the 3 fit in like nothing else...Airlines will want to be assured they are unloaded and you show them the rifles and the shotgun can be in two pieces taken down...Only TSA will want to see the numbers.. Mike

OK, I may only end up with two as Norman Crooks say 338 OK for Hippo with solids. The 20 ga O/U is for Red Duiker and Suni i e with #3 or bigger in one barrel and sabot slug in the other close range vs long range. I use to take my drilling for this purpose but just can't get the rifle to hold point of aim consistantly. So I decided to make my own "paradox gun" for little guys not the big bad ones, eh. Mike I wish I could have made the shoot, but the 416 doesn't have reounds loaded for it, the guy that does the loading is getting to be a pain in the *ss and I may end up just using factory loads.

Take a drilling, I can highly recommend it if you plan to do more than an casual bird hunt as well as your plains game. Note, you can now only take two bags of up to 50 lb each. If you can get your two rifles and one shotgun into one bag weighing 50 or less, you will be OK> Just be armed with the airline's policy in writing in case you run into a do-gooder.
