Just curious. Called a real estate agent about a hundred acre plot with a 5 bedroom log house on it, and was told it was already spoken for. Land is near Mount Pocono. Buyer apparently had a giraffe shoulder mount that was going in it, so I was wondering if it was someone on the forum. I'm not upset, just curious...Wink

Hi Johnnyreb:

That's really funny, hmmmmmm I live in PA, was looking at a parcel of land of 100 acres with a log cabin on it, near the Mt. Pocono area, and I do have a Giraffe Shoulder mount coming in.... but, but, I did not purchase the place I was looking at.

You shore that yankee real estate agent don't like rebbels.. Smiler

I have a lakehouse in Gouldsboro PA. not that far from Mt. Pocono.

Hi Bob fr GA & Johnnyreb...

Be cacrefull about the Poconos, some places you just wouldn't want to live. And now with gambling coming in, it is going to change the face of land value REAL FAST. And IT IS coming, believe me.

The land around Lake Walenpaupack is out of sight, and the lake lots are outrageous, $500K for a lakefront lot is not unheard of.

I would bypass Mt. Pocono and look around Wayne & Pike County. Little towns like Gouldsboro, Hawley, Newfundland, Hamlin are close to the Poconos but not in the heart. Carbondale and Waymart are a ways out there in my book, and the city of Scranton is just another coal mining city trying to survive. I was born and raised in Dunmore, nexct to Scranton.

My dream spread will have around 100 acres, with a nice pond or lake, with a mixture of woods and fields, with logging trails or hunting paths throughout. Some fields where I could grow food plots for the dear. I have been searching on and off for about three years, I haven't found what I am looking for yet.

Regards.... Jim P. aka PAHUnter... aka Booner as in Danl Boone... childhood nickname that never left...

PA Hunter,
Before we moved to Georgia, we lived in Lansdale PA for 10 years. We are going back to be close to our Grandkids. Looking in/near the Jim Thrope area as I have hunted there in the past. Want land with Log Cabin(or build one), perfect place would be that it backs up to State land.

Hi Bob:

I know Landasdale very well, my wife was from there. I also know Jim Thorpe, but prices can be a little steep their also, depends where exactly you want to be.

I live in Allentown, and also have a place in Gouldsboro that backs up into about 40,000 acres of state game land. It is very thick though, I wish the land was more open.

I do most of my deer hunting farther north in Kinsley, near Nicholson. But my propoerty in Gouldsboro has lots of Turkey and some great Black Bear. It has a decent deer population but no trophy racks as of yet.

That's funny, I bought the place in Gouldsboro to be near our grandkids. If I waited for my daughter to bring them to Allentown to visit I would never see them.

PAHunter, my wife talked to the real estate agent, not I, and I got the story wrong. My wife mentioned that I was a hunter and looking for land, and the real estate agent said he had a client that had a shoulder mount giraffe that was also looking for land with a cabin or something. I got the part wrong where the 100 acre plot with the 5 bedroom log cabin house was sold to someone who had a shoulder mount giraffe. You wouldn't happen to be working with Valley Associates Realty, would you? They listed the 100 acre plot near Mount Pocono that was just sold...

Anybody happen to be looking to move just a little further west, as in Clarion County? Smiler

My wife & I have 24 acres on the Clarion River (750 feet of river frontage). Woods along the river, field in front. Just beautiful, and so peaceful. Loads of deer, turkey, and the occassional bear. Great hunting all around the area.

It's only 5 miles from the exit on I-80. House site is cleared above the river, utilities (phone & electric) brought in underground, stone driveway in, brand new barn built last fall, place is ready to build. Our neighbors have just built log homes on both sides of us.

Our plans have changed & my wife now wants to move a little further west, near Mercer.

We are just getting ready to list it with a realtor.

If anyone wants to look at it before it gets listed, drop me a note...

Hi Johhnyreb:

Yep, I am working with Valley Associates also, she must of been talking to Bill, what a character, great guy. Small world huh...

Land keeps on popping up but there is always a catch or something wrong with the house, or it's a knocker downer... Smiler but I keep looking.

I just got my tanning bill from my last Safari in 2004.... I got all my capes and backskins tanned and a few life size smaller mounts.. 10 animals cost me almost $5K.... But I have a monster Giraffe skin, cape and backskin in there. That's why I need a very high ceiling...LOL

Hi Coldbore:

5 miles from what exit on I-80.??? I presume I would be traveling from Allentown on 476 North to I-80 West.. How far from where I-80 West starts from 476 North?

I looked at property in White Haven, nice lil town, but the prices were to high for what they wanted.

Will you neighbors let you hunt their property. Any good fishing in the river?

Regards... Jim P.

PAHunter,

Too funny, it is a small world. When my wife mentioned that the real estat agent spoke about a client with a shoulder mount giraffe, my response to her was that I was going post about it on AR to see if it was someone here.

What is Gouldsboro like? It seems that a few of the properties we have seen advertised are from around there...

Hi JR:

Gouldsboro is a little town just off of I380 on 507 North.

The biggest development is Big Bass Lake, they have over 1100 homes in there. The next deveolpment that I have a lakehouse in is called Lakeview Estates, great bass fishing and Turkey & Black bear are plentiful.. about 60 homes with a 150 acre private lake. But the town itself is small with a few churches and great hardware store.

There are like 4 or 5 lakes in and around Gouldsboro, including Gouldsboro State Park.

You are about 15 to 20 miles away from Lake Walenpaupack. And pretty close to Hawley, Newfudland and Hamlin. If you had to hit the malls it takes about a 20 minute drive out 380 to 81...

You are definitely country but could get to Scranton or the malls real fast via 380.

Hope that helps...

Regards... Jim P.

Pretty far west of where you're at if you're near Allentown...

It's off of Exit 53 (or the old Exit 7). That puts it 53 miles from Ohio, so it's the opposite side of the state for you. Frowner Do a Mapquest search for Knox, PA (the nearest town). We're just south & west of there a few miles along the river.

All except one. He keeps his field as a "nature preserve" (uncut). The deer love to cross the road & come down through the field right on the edge between our places. Makes for a great crossing to cover! Wink Otherwise, you could get tired of walking on all of the rest of the property around there. Everyone else is fine with hunting by the neighbors, if you just ask first.

Definitely. It's relatively shallow, and rocky along the stretch behind us. Much nicer than typical mud bottom stuff. Also, it keeps the boats away. Perfect for canoes & kayaks (and tubes on a lazy hot summer afternoon...), but outboards are pretty much not gonna get it through there. Makes it that much quieter and peaceful.

There are nice big holes at the bridges upstream & downstream from us (maybe a mile or two in either direction), and nice shallow (waist deep or so on a typical day) water in between...

The river is exactly 300 feet wide straight behind where I planned to build. I shot it with a laser rangefinder a few years back. It's more or less that width for miles along there.

A friend has a picture of a musky of about three feet in length that they found about a mile downstream from us, dead on the bank. Seemed it choked on it's dinner, a big bass! The tail is still sticking out of it's mouth. No kidding. I wish I had a copy of it, I'd send it to you.

If you're interested in being that far west, drop me a note, I can email you some pictures if you like.

Thanks.

Hi Coldbore:

The property sounds great, but you are correct in your assumption that it is to far west for me.

My family, brother & sister, daughter and grandkids live in the Scranton and Moscow area. Thus that is why I want to move in that direction, farther North.

Good luck o selling the property..
