In an attempt to stop you all biting your nails in anticipation of the big draw and to make a change from all the usual subjects about prices, product quality, when should the PH do this or that etc, so I thought that just for fun, I’d test your knowledge of past & present Africa with this quiz – I’ve tried to make suitable for as many people as possible & I hope I haven’t repeated any questions from previous threads & I look forward to your replies……if you can’t answer all of the questions, just answer the ones you can. So who can answer the following?

When does the Leopard hunting season end in Tuli Block Botswana?

Where was the Land of Punt?

What was the name of the man who first caused the expression “White Hunter†to be coined?

What did “BEA†stand for and what is “BEA†now known as?

What was the name of the famous English poet who once crawled into a cave and killed a leopard with a spear? (Tough one huh!)

Name the various types of Marlin that can be found in the oceans around Africa?

What was the big rumour about the old time East African PH Fritz Schindelar?

To what do the letters in the Selous hunting block numbers refer?

What’s the common name for Dichrostachys Cinerea (no peeking in books!) & what do the indigenous populations often use the leaves for?

What was the name of the first warden of the Kruger National Park RSA?

What was the name of the man who killed a lion with a knife in the Kruger National Park & what is his grandson famous for?

Which African tree grows near water, lowers the PH level of the soil around it, is frequently ring barked by porcupines and shouldn’t be used to braii on?

It's a good thing you mentioned leaves, as I was about to guess it was the latin name for some sort of dinosaur! Big Grin

(Even though it didn't end with "saur" Wink )

Primarily it is the Guide Gun which PHs refused to let their clients use in the field, so the clients threw the Guide Guns into rivers, and the Guide Guns eventually washed out to sea. However there are also a few Marlin 1895's out there too.

Harry Wolhuter killed a lion with a knife in Kruger in the early part of the last century and his grandson is a well respected nature film producer.

Is "BEA" British East Africa and if so would it be Kenya and the surrounding countries?

That's two of them answered - the grandson's name is Kim Wolhuter who makes wildlife documentaries (mostly) for Nat Geographic.

As you say BEA is now Kenya.

Now......who can answer any of the others!

Sorry to interrupt, but James Stevenson-Hamilton was the first warden of the Kruger National Park RSA I believe.

I actually read that online when I was helping my nephew Nicky look for some information on Kruger Park, he aims to be a hunter like his Uncle Pete, and a PH someday.

I think it was Ernest Hemingway's writing about Africa that started use of the phrase "White Hunter".

The letters in the Selous hunting block seem to correlate pretty closely with the first letter(s) in the name of the river adjacent to the block.

I was going to guess Tambuti for the last question, as I know it should not be used for a braii (unless you enjoy "running stomach"), but I did not notice any correlation with water for this particular tree.

Cheers,
Canuck

I just finished reading about that a few months back... it was in regards to Alan Black, but it wasn't he that coined it... I don't think.
i do recall that there were two "hunters" (one white & one black) and the "white" designation was give to differentiate between two.

What was the name of the famous English poet who once crawled into a cave and killed a leopard with a spear? (Tough one huh!) Brian Brooke, who incidentally failed to beat the clock during WW1.- God bless him!

Name the various types of Marlin that can be found in the oceans around Africa? - Black, Blue & Striped

What was the big rumour about the old time East African PH Fritz Schindelar? – That he was a Hungarian Prince that had gone into hiding following some kind of misdemeanour at home.

To what do the letters in the Selous hunting block numbers refer? Rivers

What’s the common name for Dichrostachys Cinerea (no peeking in books!) & what do the indigenous populations often use the leaves for? - Sickle Bush, the chewed or crushed leaves can be used as an anaesthetic.

What was the name of the first warden of the Kruger National Park RSA? – J. Stevenson Hamilton

What was the name of the man who killed a lion with a knife in the Kruger National Park & what is his grandson famous for? – Harry Wolhuter, his grandson Kim now makes wildlife documentaries for National Geographic…….often about Leopards.

The land of Punt - is that where the Queen of Sheba came from?

Actually the location of land of Punt is only speculated upon by deduction from writings and hieroglyphics (splg?). It has been speculated as being in several different places, but is generally accepted as being to the SE of Egypt in Ethiopia and/or Sudan.

OK Steve I have got a contest for you or for anyone else:

Confused Q. What are the species of grasses or reeds that are used for making the excellent neat waterproof thatched roofs in Southern Africa? Confused

John,

The indiginous peoples like to use the KISS principle (Keep It Simple Stupid) so they'll generally use whatever is most conveniently available - but if they have a choice they tend to use what is commonly known as "thatch grass" roflmao (what a suprise!) or the scientific name is Hypercernea Herta......and of course the old favourite of corregated iron!

Hope the quick quiz gave some of a you a bit of fun and I'll try to do another one over the weekend.....

As you guessed the "quizz" was actually a "cleverly disguised plan" (in the words of Baldrick the Blackadder's sidekick).

I NEED to find a good grass or reed in Australia even if I have to grow some that is a good substitute. What the old thatched buildings used here was hay and it looks aweful in comparison. Same as these ugly "Bali-style" thatched roofs.

Thanks for the answer. thumb

John,

Don't you have some kind of tough reed that grows locally you could use?
