Discount African Hunts
I was wondering if anyone has ever booked a hunt through this website Discount African Hunts and John Martins?

At one point he was booking hunts in the SAVE Valley on land taken from its owners by squatters. That's one reason I didn't book with him. I'm not sure if he still represents the same thieves or not.

Slingshot,
I have not personally booked a hunt through him, but a friend has twice and been happy both times. I met him in camp while hunting South Africa in 2018 (on a hunt not booked through him). He's a salesman but seemed to be a pretty honest person. That was my gut feeling and I would consider him but he seems to focus mainly on South Africa and that is a place I have no desire to ever hunt again.

Interesting quote but how true is it? For example I wanted to hunt Zambia a few years back but everyone I talked to had multiple charters. My hunting taste is that of a millionaire but an emptier pocketbook and charters made the hunt unaffordable. Actually the cost of charters may have exceeded the trophy fees.

So what I did was map every Zambian Hunting Outfit on a map. I may have been on the wrong side of a river but it let me see how I could avoid charter fees and afford a hunt.

The upside was that I discovered Charlie Harvey and the Africa House. One I had a great hunt and Charlie introduced me to the concept of Freedom while hunting.

Secondly the benefit of hunting with Charlie was the history of his family, history of Germans in East Africa, the last shots of WWI fired about 80 KM away. Him hosting Von Lettow - Vorbeck's grandson, talk of the SMS Konningsberg in the Rufiji delta- everything I was interested in.

It was one of the best experiences of a lifetime plus I had a very enjoyable hunt.

So again, I am going to map every outfitter in the Masai and see what I can make happen be it December or four years from now. Smiler

As long as you understand WHY a discount is offered, have at it. It's one thing to buy a true cancellation hunt, or a late season hunt where the quota is about to be lost; it's another to buy a hunt in a marginal area that has been heavily poached; and entirely to be avoided are illegal hunts.

He booked hunt with a few outfitters in SA that I know and have hunted with. I never booked a hunt using him though as I did get the use car salesman feel when talking with him. He books for legit people though.

As for all the dont book cheap hunts you get what you pay for that is a load of bs. I have never paid what so many guys do to hunt namibia or SA and have great hunts. You do need to do your home work and dont plan on five start when your paying for 3 star.

I don't think Lavaca said "Don't book cheap hunts" - he said, "You get what you pay for."

If you can travel at the last minute, you can get some great deals. And let's face it: there is a big difference between a ranch hunt and a tented safari.

AZ Writer,

You said what I intended much more eloquently that I did.

I've seen some discount hunts that were really good deals. One recently was a whole lot less than I paid for essentially the same hunt, less lion.

As to Masailand, I've never chartered in Masailand. You can do that with a ground transfer at a lot less expense. And you get an added experience seeing some territory from the ground, although we did have to dig some Chinese tourists out who were very stuck on one occasion. I've been bad stuck, but truly amazing how anyone could get themselves into such a situation.
