All, sitting in Monterrey, Mx right now planning some things to do end of March this year in Zim. I will be looking for some ele early and then my wife and 2 other couples will join us. All the safari stuff is arranged but we have 3-4 days in the Vic Falls area for touristy stuff. What in some of your experiences is the best activities "bang for your buck that you remember and would do again" things that you did in this area? I have not locked in anything yet and I do know Russel Caldecott but would like your views on how to plan this time. OK to PM me also if you wish.

Cheers,

Larry

Of course the big attraction and one I found absollutely mind boggling was the Falls them selves. There is also a game drive you can make along the Zambezi tho I did not have nearly enough time on. Also when I was there (which was some years ago) there was an ultralight flight you could take. Also the big hotel/casino had just opened and it was quite a sight. The waterfall was especially impressive. I found shopping to be very disapointing. There are several hotels there that are in and of themselves marvelous establishments far above my limited means but beautiful to visit especially the one overlooking the golf course where all kinds of animals roam the course. One day is a waste,2 days barely enough and 3 days would be fair I imagine. I was lucky to have my PH friend that had close friends that ran a tour service and we stayed in their guest house and ate with them. They ran game viewing tours in Zambia. They have since immigrated to Australia.

There are a number of activities you can do in Vic Falls.

1. Bungee jump, zip line, gorge swing etc
2. White water rafting, can do half day or full day.
3. Helicopter flights over the falls.
4. Booze cruise above the falls.
5. You have to eat out one night at the Boma.
6. Have high tea at the Vic Falls Hotel.

This should keep you busy for the time you their.

I've done the Vic Falls visit post-pre safari 8 or 9 times so I've had some experience and I'll do it another dozen times if I don't run out of money or croak or something?

All of the above suggestions are great. Some others:

You ought to spend at least one night at Gorges Lodge. You will truly be "living on the edge". Gorges Lodge website

The golf course is not the best, but fun, particularly if you don't mind losing a ball or two to a baboon.

Fishing is worth the fair, for sure. If you've never caught a tiger fish, stand by for a great experience.

Dinner one night in the Ilala Lodge is a must, also.

If Russell Caldecott is still taking clients, he can arrange everything for you including a "personal" guide (ask for Zwe) who will make everything seamless. www.ultimatelodge.com I own a goat there, btw.

Anytime you can spend with David Hulme (often he's at the Ultimate Lodge with Russell Candecott) is a treasure of Zimbabwe information.

There are lions walks, elephant rides, canoe trips, river rafting (if you want to almost die climbing out of the gorge afterwards! Big Grin )

I've got a video of our last trip to the falls and a safari thereafter. If you'll send me a p.m. I'll send it to you.

JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

I had great fun on the Zip-Line over the Vic Falls gorge! The staff assured me that they haden't lost anyone that day but to keep my feet up at the end because of the mean old croc at the of the zip.
Best zip line I've been on in a while.

The only easy day is yesterday!

Take the Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi. All you can drink Zambezi Lager.

Vic Falls is 2-3 days for me. I recommend heading over to Botswana and fishing with Ichingo River Lodge. After Vic Falls VERY nice camp, and its only a 3 hour drive than a 15 min boat ride great fishing guides, and you get to tour the Okavango Delta by boat. Seeing Buff, crocs, hippos, lions is a ton of fun, and watching ele's play in the water is entertaining.

Mink and Wall Tents don't go together. Especially when you are sleeping in the Wall Tent.

We've done the Zambezi Cruise, the helicopter flight, the Boma restaurant and high tea at the old Victoria Falls hotel, among other things while in Vic Falls. All of them were well worth it. Again, no thanks to the bungee jump-but maybe the zip line next time I'm there. Big Grin
