Thank you for your input Anton. I put this list together for my own use in deciding what to go after, and I did it using various sources, and interpolating weights from weight ranges. I am always open to corrections, and it is just a guide I offer to first-timers (who often don't know a kudu from a springbok).

Here is my modified list:

giraffe - 1200 kg
eland - 550 kg
zebra - 313 kg
roan - 280 kg
greater kudu - 270 kg
water buck - 260 kg
blue wildebeest - 250 kg
gemsbok - 240 kg
sable - 235 kg
black wildebeest - 180 kg

Sorry Charl,
I do not know Steve Pascuan. Could it be Pascual?
Regardless, I know neither.

Hunter54, buffalo are also like bovine cattle, but surely a 260 or 270 caliber is not recommended. I have killed three eland on a management hunt with a 7.62 x 39 mini mauser. One cow was a problem animal that had killed a horse, one cow had a broken back, and the last bull was blind from eating a toxic fruit. Of course, all were head shots.

Yes, giraffe is the largest of the plains game animals by far.

giraffe - 1200 kg
eland - 550 kg
zebra - 313 kg
roan - 280 kg
blue wildebeest - 250 kg
water buck - 250 kg
gemsbok - 240 kg
sable - 235 kg
greater kudu - 227 kg
black wildebeest - 180 kg

Eland weigh much more than 550kg. Quite recently I saw an article on and eland bull that slaughtered out at 415kg. 350+kg on carcass weight then you start talking about proper eland.

I love animals, they are delicious!

The range for bulls I've seen quoted is 800 - 2200 pounds (364 - 1000 KG). I settled on 550 KG (1200 pounds) as typical, but am open to suggestion.

My dad took Ernie (his eland) with a .300 ultra and 180gr TBBC. One of the best steaks I've had after cooking to your preference on cast iron flats that had been on the fire.

I suspect what may have been meant is Eland is the largest plains game antelope. Certainly Giraffe is larger.

I trust that this helps a bit, and if anyone would like the weights of other animals, say so. Cool

Sheet, I tried to set it out as a spread sheet and it went to hell??

I think an important thing to consider is legal minimum calabre, although this does not mean a badly placed shot with a biger calabre will help, the bigger the better. I have shot a big eland bull with a 223 using military solids and this works, was it clever, absoloutlly not but it worked. Legal minimum in Zim is .338 and I certainlly would suggest a .375 with premium ammo,
