Hunted with Nixon and one buff wouldn't go down and tried to come after us Died in hail of bullets I liked Ishmael, great guy and pleasant person to be with and good PH. Anybody says otherwise they don't know squat These situation can develop into anything no matter what the PH does. Holy crap, Butch! I just read about your charge....Boy you were lucky too!! It's amazing how those bulls are powerful.. With that much lead in him and in so many critic areas and he still had a lot of fight in him. I can't wait to get my hide; I want to count the holes myself to see how many of Ishmail's shots connected Our customs agent informed us today that we'll get the dip and Pak stuff (including the hide) in the US next week. Then to the taxidermist. When I get home I'll put some pictures up. I don't have that many as we had to rush to take me for medical attention and the boys only took one picture of my buff as they were quartering him. I have some of my battle scars too though. following wounded buffalo is seriously dangerous, leave it to the PH.. Does any one know if Ishmael is a fully licenced PH in Zim???
|

That sounds so wrong. When one wounds an animal, one better follows it alongside the PH. If you want to leave it to him to follow, you better stay home.

Sorry Saeed, I didn't see you had said the same thing. But I agree with you 100%. This appears to be the typical "The PH will sort it all out if things go pear shaped" attitude. These types of incidents don't happen often, but they do happen often enough that anyone who pursues DG should be prepared to hold up their end of the bargain concerning shooting and sorting out one's own mistakes. The PH may very well need to save the hunter's arse, but then again, the hunter may need to save the PH. One never knows ahead of time.

In full agreement with Saeed and Todd. Yes, Ishmael is a fully licensed Zim. PH. I hunted with him last year (2012) with him as Zim PH working under Paul Phelan. I am in full agreement with Saeed and Todd but the reality for many PHs is often far similar to what Pete458lott has said. I know of at least three instances where hunters have shot and injured dangerous game and then gone and sought comfort in the land cruiser as the PHs and trackers go to dispatch their injured animal and they get ready to come back for their pictures. One hunting party actually said "they get paid to do this" and another ran after shooting an elephant and locked himself in the land cruiser. This fine fellow had also drunk a fifth of vodka before going/being taken to shoot his elephant that had been diligently tracked by his PH for most of the day and this was on no canned south african hunt. If PHs came here told the whole truth and nothing but the truth they would be a lot more stories like this. Will not and should not happen as they are at the end in a service business and the client needs to come out looking good/alive/brave.

I think you did the right thing under the circumstances in grabbing the horns. Let's hope your recovery is swift. I once tracked (or more correctly, followed my PH and trackers) a buff that I had shot for a total of 11 hours, into the evening and then much of the next day. Lucky for me, it did not end like yours. We finally lost the track when it crossed those of a herd. It hurt my pride and I felt like an incompetent dummy, but nothing else happened other than losing a fine animal. The trackers had easily found where the bull had bedded down, but it kept moving and I could never get another clear shot. I did learn a lot about tracking from them. What we have to take into consideration is the mental state of the client. I know some PH who have actually asked - or demanded! - that the client states behind. Because of one reason or another. On many occasions I have heard PHs say their worst fear is being in danger from some of their clients, rather than any wounded animal. Hunting dangerous game, 99.9% is NOT dangerous. It is when that 0.1% comes up you better be ready for it. Because you only get one chance. I have followed several shot animals that can make your life short. That include lion, leopard and buffalo. There is no preplanning about it. You have to take your present situation into account, and do the best to protect yourself and those around you. Gung-ho bravery should be left at home. It is good for a Hollywood style movie, but has nothing to do with hunting.

Sorry but if I am the PH and every PH we know feels the same way. If the shooter is a coward or cannot shoot or is trigger happy. Do you really want this person with a loaded gun on a follow up?? Better they remain in a safe place where they will not shoot you in the back. Or you expose yourself to un-needed danger with someone of that mind set. These people should be basket weavers and not hunters.

Well- Let's just say this thread and others have not been stellar advertisements for SSG- Snippet list from the thread- A.) 1.) "I hit him on top of the right shoulder "- "---annoyed that my guide didn't back up my shot." 2.) "15 mins passed and I hear a shot" 3.) "Another 15 mins and a further 6 shots were fired." 4.) "despite 8 slugs in him" 5.) "Shoot him, shoot him, shoot him..." but no shots were fired." 6.) "hear the much awaited shots.... 9 in total, " 7.) "the buffalo wasn't dead yet;" B.) "I hunted Sengwe 1 with Ishmael as 2nd PH last yr. Can't say that I was impressed with him" C.) "My wife and I hunted with Ishmael. When she shot, wounded and lost her buffalo, Ishmael was in his glases also instead of backing her up as requested. I like Ishmael, he's a great guy, but if hunting SSG, I'd ask for Nixon or Simon." D.) "Every other client seems to get bashed up in this part of the world. And I have never heard of a PH having to put 7 bullets into a buff." E.) "Grabbing the horns of a wounded buff and being shaken like a rat happened to another AR member somewhere in Sengwe not too long ago as I'm sure you know. " "I learned from Jay Southam yesterday, who was also kind enough to send me some really good picttures of the Sengwe camps and his beautiful buffalos, that you too had the very same experience; only instead of you and Ishmail it was you and Nixon! Wow, what a coincidence!" F.) ptperes, I was in the other camp and when you were hit. I met Chris when Nixion came into our area. Sorry for your trouble and I hope you fully recover soon. Someone in Nixion's party had a wreck on the way back from the hospital. We found the car that had gone off the road and hit a tree. Be glad you were not in it. I heard this was the third time your PH had be hit by buff. Anyways glad your back and I hope you don't give up on Africa. Hi Jeff, I was actually in the car crash; going back to camp from the hospital where I got the X-ray. I just didn't want to add that ridiculous bit.... :-) you just couldn't make that stuff up! I was in the front seat; Boney was driving and Nixon was in the back seat. Again, by the grace of God, Chris and the rest of the party were riding in the Cruiser 2 mins behind us.

Ah, forgot to mention, I had no seat belt on because with a totally stiff leg I couldn't fit the belt comfortably on me... The luck was that the tree collapsed and Boney and I didn't go through the windshield; But the car, as you saw, ended up on top of the tree root!!

We were talking about a PH from Zimbabwe who has had an extraordinary amount of bad luck while hunting. A friend described him as "If he had to pick a bucket out of a 100, 99 are filled with gold and one is full of shit, he would pick the shit bucket. Every time!"

ptperes you need to do at least one more DG trip to Africa, but be very careful. They say bad things happen in 3. Survive one more and you can write a book most would think of as fiction as the events could not possible have happened.

Hummm... Not sure about going back for another DG adventure; It's fair to say that nothing much went right in my first attempt. If I get to go back to Africa at all (and here's where the Mrs. ok would still be required) I'd consider myself lucky (and stubborn) enough! Looks like I've already used 2 lives; considering I'm a private pilot, I could use the remaining ones for my day-to-day...:-)
