Varmints in Africa

Anybody know of a place I can do some high volume long range varminting?

Could be separate from a regular safari or with it.

Prefer Namibia or South Africa.

Someone with a lot of baboon, dassie, monkey, jackals and such.

There are plenty of places where you can do some control shooting but none of them qualify as "high volume" by US standards. And if there were you would need to take out a loan as most places charge circa $100 per for these species. The only "high volume" hunts I am aware of are dove/pigeon shoots over sunflowers (June only); and, to a lesser extent, springbok culls. I can help you with either of those shoots.

If you want a low budget pest control hunt, you are better off finding a commercial farmer than hunting on a "concession" where everything has a price on its head. I may be able to help you there as well.

Baboon hunting is more like sniping than varminting. It takes a lot of patience and long range shooting skills. You will do well to take a couple a day.

Dassies might be problematic as I think they are protected in some jurisdictions.

Monkeys are a pest in many places

Shooting guinea fowl with a .22 LR is great fun and challenging when they have been targeted for a while. Also, good eating!

Jan Du Plessis (Sebra Safaris) has a bunch of jackals and baboons. The baboons can be shot at long range. I am tempted to hunt with him again and bring a varmint call/decoy.

I always wanted to get in a good jackal area with a high quality electronic game caller and a camo suit for few days. My heavy 25-06 would be the 'cat's meow' for that.

A look at the current national law on regulation of the hunting industry would be in order as it pertains to South Africa.

Biodiversity Act No 10 of 2004

SCI have a very concise information document on this.

" No Sport hunting for damage causing animals -- The rule bans sport-hunting by “hunting clients” (that is, non-South Africans who are paying for a hunt) for damage causing animals.
“Damage causing” = causes losses to livestock; damages cultivated trees or crops or other property; presents a threat to human life; or is present in such numbers that agricultural grazing is materially depletedIt is illegal to hunt birds that are considered as game birds under the provincial laws with a rifle of caliber 22 rimfire or smaller, this would also include doves and pigeons.

But some in RSA have oryx culls.

Tysue went down a few yrs ago and
shot i think 25 or so of 'em.
Fairly cheap too.

I think there is a vermin problem worldwide, not sure anyone is offering any guided hunts for them!

Guinea fowl are not vermin. Hunting with a .22 is for the pot only, WHERE LEGAL.

Monkeys now require a special permit in all provinces to hunt, as do Baboons. Check with your Outfitter.

D.C.A. permits can be obtained but is very controlled now.

A lot of farmers do SSS but that's on the hunter. Personally I would not risk it. The days of just shooting a Baboon or Monkey because the owner said so, is gone.

I’ll second the recommendation by AAZW of Sebra Hunting Safaris. Sebra is currently offering a 25% discount on their daily rates or $260 a day for 1/1 hunting. Trophy fees are $50 for Jackals and $200 for Baboons. Add in World Class gourmet cooking done by Jan’s wife Mariesje and it’s a steal. My only caveat is that if you go when the temps are lowest (July) the Baboons seem to disappear up in the mountains. When I hunted in July 2015, the temps were in the 20’s in the early AM, and we didn’t see a single Baboon. After a couple of days, the temps warmed up and the Baboons magically appeared. A European Mount of a nature male Baboon is a unique (and inexpensive) trophy. They have larger incisors than a leopard.
