At the same place/time? This is not definite by any means, but my father and uncle have started thinking about going to Namibia to hunt PG - and would want to bring along their sons -- so, 5 of us all together...

Is it really doable to have 5 hunters out of the same camp in Namibia?

Steve,

I think it might be a better idea to answer any question posted here on the forums, rather than through PMs.

There might be others who are interested in the same type of hunt.

Hell, yes. Quite a lot of the areas I hunt have trophy quotas of more than 20 gemsbok per year. Some have populations of literally thousands. Puros concervancy has a population of close to 4000 gemsbok.

You'll probably get several affirmative responses from agents and outfitters. Just be sure to ask some very specific questions as to the size of the property, fencing, availability of PH's for 1x1 vs 2x1 and number of oryx taken each year from the subject property.

Frankly, it might be hard to take 5 really good heads from the same camp during the course of the same hunt. You might find that one or more of your party will travel to another adjoining property each morning and afternoon so that you aren't bumping into eachother.

There are some good outfits in Namibia with access to large properties. You can probably make it work, just make your expectations clear from the begining and ask a lot of questions.

Hey, Aglifter:

I and my son & friend hunted Namibia last June with Nomtsas Guest & Hunting Farm, about three hours south of Windhoek. They are strictly a family operation on a VERY large (150,000 acre) place. They are also a working cattle ranch and not just stictly a hunting mill, and I liked the atmosphere very much. I never dreamed of so many high quality oryx (gemsbok) -- as well as sprinbok, kudu, warthog, hartebeast, zebra, wildebeast, giraffe and on and on. We killed an oryx apiece, plus my son took a second one (part of the 27 animals among the three of us). All went SCI Gold Medal. I have no doubt that with just a little patience you could find both a top ten oryx and springbok on Nomtsas. They are equipped to accomodate up to six hunters (so long as they are all one party, as they do not accept more than one party at a time). Their private rooms are extremely comfortable, modern, and clean. And Heino, the patriarch, is one of the most knowledgable persons I've ever come across about his beloved cattle and wildlife, including their biology and ecology. Albert is Heino's son and handles all of the booking and email correspondence. You can contact him through their website at http://www.namhunt.de/en/huntstart.html By the way, as you can see from their website, their prices are among the most attractive you'll find and are a bargain by any measure. Drop me a PM if you'd like any more information.

Here are a couple of our oryx (gemsbok) photos

Aglifter,
I'm following Saeed suggestion. Smiler

The American organizator that works with the Namibian company that I used to hunt there two times is T.J.Safaris.

Mark, please could you clarify: Is the $4900 inclusive of trophy fees on the listed animals? As further down you say that trophy fees not included?
Cheers Stu

Stu,

On the special the animals mentioned are included in the package price. If you shoot additional game you pay the listed trophy fees.

Aglifter, as a matter of interest, I will be able to give you 40 or more trophies per one area, on at least 2 of my areas. More than 20 on another 2, and 10-20 on most remaining areas.

Another very important question to really gauge your requirements, what other animals will you and your group be interested in?

I am curious if everyone had the same view of what constitutes a good gemsbok? For me it is an old bull with heavy horns. For someone else it may need to measure forty inches. What you want may make a difference.

Charles - Interesting question. I have hunted many gemsbuck, and I also perfer the older bulls with heavy horns. I have shot two bulls that were close to 40", but both were young bulls. I have shot a couple that were close to 36" that were very heavy, a much better trophy in my book.

What about a cow that is over 40"? From my experience, most gemsbuck that are over 40" are cows.

I would guess the rest of us would be more interested in heavy horns as well -- I know my father, brother and I are all more interested in "interesting" trophies than in records...

As for other trophies...I would like warthogs -- I don't know if they're readily available in Namibia, but my brother's interested in Kudu and eland

Although I am not hung up on inches it would be relevant to see what quality of trophies the area holds when you ask about five decent bulls. So long as it matches the expectations of your group that is fine.

My experience is a bit limited with only one trip to Namibia but it seems Eland quotas may be more limited than for Kudu. Warthog are definitely there but numbers may depend on the water. These are all excellent questions for your potential outfitters or PHs.

Ask what they took as far as numbers and quality of animals in the last couple of years, and get pictures if you can. Again, I am not hung up on inches but if you expect three 55" plus Kudu and the average has been closer to 50" you will be disappointed.

Many of us are looking for a quality hunt for mature animals, and not the next Rowland Ward No. 1, but the more homework you do the less chance you will be disappointed.

In the two photos above, the upper one is a cow with longer, more slender horns. The lower is a rather heavy bull (the way the horns are tilted away from the camera makes them appear shorter than actual). Both have their charms. If you want length, your best one will be a cow. If you want mass, your best will be a bull.
