The symptoms of hallucinations and paranoa are classic side effects of Larium. It effects some people very badly..... Just horrible she jumped out of the plane.... I’ll be sticking with Doxy..... | |||

The amazing fact is that several of us have been taking Larium for so many years, never had any problems whatsoever. Have heard of at least 2 wives on safari who were so badly affected they had to go home!! May be Walter is wright. We are brainless!  | |||

Rest in peace. Larium always did have side effects; though some people would be affected and others not. I still take Deltaprim, and I haven't had any problems with malaria in over 30 years, spending quite a bit of time in the bush. | |||

My wife and I took larium all four times we travelled to Africa. On one trip I had a single dream that may have been of that sort, but I actually enjoyed that dream. My wife never had any sort of side effect. I much prefer that one dream to having malaria. I hope the young lady is at peace now. Obviously she was not as lucky as we were. I have heard of people who had such side effects, and was told by one person who had that my doctor was guilty of malpractice for prescribing it for us. I don't think we will be filing charges, Most of my money I spent on hunting and fishing. The rest I just wasted | |||

Who knows if she was on other psychotic drugs as well? Larium has been around for some time.Wouldn't there be more stories like this? Jumping off a plane is not the same as having intense dreams or feeling really nervous.Antidepressants have been reported to make people do crazy things. | |||

George until you have experienced it it’s very easy to doubt the side effects. There is a reason the Australian Army cut short it’s trial of Larium a few years ago. There has been ongoing legal action in the USA against the US Military over the effects of Larium on troops. I will never touch the stuff again, would rather get malaria than use it, as I have written in previous posts. DRSS | |||

Dads best friend growing up went to Indonesia as a missionary. After being there two years, he had an immediate reaction to Malaria medication causing a massive heart attack. This was in 1981. | |||

Because of the various meds and blood thinners my wife takes, Larium is the only anti-malarial that is compatible. She used it for 4 weeks in 2007 and again in 2012 with no side effects whatsoever. I was concerned after reading all the stories of bizarre behavior, but asked her and she said no issues at all. | |||

My wife took Larium when we went and experienced hallucinations. I took Mefloquine and had none. One of our friends that took Larium also experienced Hives over 90% of his body. Guns and hunting | |||

Larium sent my wife over the edge. We had to stop after a couple of days and go to DeltaPrim. We use Malarone now. | |||

Not to call anyone on this but " almost " dying from Lariam in 1982 ? How can this be when Roche only got FDA approval for what they called Lariam in 1989 ? Doxy which is a tetracycline only got approved for use in Malaria prophylaxis in 1994 . Unless off course one was part of a drug trial in which case the drug only went by a number and not a name. Lariam was not available in South Africa until circa 1993 an at that point it was still part of clinical trials. (I know because I given the option and subsequently being part of a trial when travelling to Kenya and Tanzania in June of 1993 ) Just for thought ! Most of the classic antimalarials (Quinolones ) have this property of causing hallucinations , depression and suicidal ideation ! Even our old friend Chloroquine ! Malarone which is a combination drug is not exempt from this either. The problem at hand is specifically Chloroquine resistant Falciparum Malaria ! When dealing with Malaria in Subsaharan Africa this is the "killer" and the problem is amplified in tourists / visitors who have never been exposed to malaria ie "no immunity" and "partial immunity" persons. "Immunity" in Malaria is not a "true immunity" but rather whether there was prior exposure and there is adaptation against getting the disease. We see this in people who live in falciparum malaria areas. During the Angolan bush war (South African border war 1966 to 1990) South African defence personnel were deployed in Malaria endemic areas and the biggest issue with malaria was non compliance with the actual taking of malaria medication. The medics had to enforce the taking of medications on what became known as the weekly "Malaria parade" Troops were lined up each with water bottle in hand , they were given their two Chloroquine tablets, which they then swallowed in front of a NCO. The reason for not wanting to take the medication was that it stopped one from getting a sun tan ! | |||

What’s the chemistry between the anti-malarials and hallucinations? What is the drug doing to prevent malaria that gets that “deep?” I *think* my dreams were more vivid on malarone, but not 100% sure as I have had wonky dreams my whole life. I also have extra vivid dreams when I get very hot when I sleep, which I did every night. Dunno, strange stuff all around... | |||

Larium is my malaria pill, and has never made me crazier than I am already! This is indeed an odd and troubling case. Given Larium's many documented and problematic side effects, we have never used it. But in this case, this poor woman left Madagascar on her eighth day in country. So, am I wrong in thinking that she may have taken one, or at most two doses of Larium? Very strange. I’ve heard of last minute travelers taking “loading doses,” to get ramped up for a trip. Not sure if it applies here, but I can’t imagine what taking Larium daily would do to someone.. | |||

different drugs act differently with different people. have a friend who works in a vet clinic extremely allergic to a carrying agent used in a common medication. only person the company has ever heard of having reactions to it, pill form all is well injectable needs to be away from the area for a spell and away from animals that received it for about 24 hours just a shame no one was able to stop this lady before she made her jump | |||
