Hunting Industry Lauded 22 November 2010 Pretoria — South Africa's hunting industry has received a pat on the back from Water and Environmental Affairs Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi for its contribution to the economy. "The hunting industry makes a valuable contribution to the economy of our country and according to a report compiled by the department, based on information provided by the provincial conservation authorities, the revenue generated directly through hunting, during 2009, amounts to R650 million," the minister said. During the recent Professional Hunters Association of South Africa's (PHASA) annual convention, Mabudafhasi also acknowledged the hunting industry's contribution to skills development and job creation in the environmental sector. "I urge you to continue with these initiatives, but to also focus on other initiatives to transform not only the hunting industry, but also the broader wildlife industry," she added. The minister said it was reassuring to note that PHASA did not condone unethical hunting and disciplined its members who were involved in unacceptable hunting practices. PHASA President Eduard Katzke said the group was committed to socio-economic development, especially in rural areas, and to securing foreign investment. "To ensure the sustainability of the industry, we are committed to responsible utilisation of our natural resources for life and livelihoods. This is being achieved by means of effective management and direct investments," he added. That R650 million figure she quoted seems conservative. Bill Quimby | |||
