joesterQuestion on a 1-gun "battery"
I plan to take my .375 Ruger on my next African hunt...but I also plan to hunt honey badgers and other "small" game... Can anyone reccomend where I might order much less powerful custom handloads for these smaller animals? I realize point of zero would be different but shots should be close and I don't want to ruin hides... Some guys say to use a regular monolithic solid instead...thoughts on this as well? Thanks...

L. David KeithI would ask your PH if they have a loaner rifle in small caliber or a shotgun. A lot easier than fooling around with POI on your 375.

Use Enough GunI have shot numerous small trophies from Gennet Cat to Livingstone's Suni to Klipspringer to many of the Duikers, all with Trophy Bonded Sledgehammer solids from my .375 H&H. In fact, on my upcoming trip in a couple of weeks I'll be taking it to shoot more small trophies including porcupine, serval, african wild cat, honey badger, etc. etc. etc. Small hole going in and small hole going out.

7kongoniWhile tracking eland, a "huge" steinbok presented himself about 20 yards away. I shot him broadside with a 300 grain Sierra softpoint. It just poked a small hole in and out--not enough resistance to cause the bullet to open up.

Absolutely agree with the others. Solids will work fine for the little. Personal I've shot red duiker and dik-dik with solids. Very little damage even at the 375 WBY velocites of 2725 fps.

From personal experiences just taking your 375 as a one battery Gun is perfect , on one one of my previouse safaris we tracked some eland down , Unfortionatly it was getting dark so we decided to abandone the stalk and whils walking back to the hunting cruiser we bumped into two Honebadgers , both were shot using standard sledgehammers , simple. Enough said.

rnoviI shot a 140# Texas Whitetail with a 300gr. Partition. There was no expansion...I'd say that certainly would be doable for Blesbok down to not worry about expansion.

woodsieNever been to africa, but just took my 375 to Texas for Waterbuffalo. Also shot a Javalina, Blackbuck, and a fallow. All clean in and out with no damage.
I was using Swift A-Frames.

Negative. Only BArnes is *curently* affected and only their brass solids in certain calibers. Their website has an update on the ATF crap.

BwanaColeFunny enough, at the moment I can buy .375 solids here in the UK but not expanding ammo! They consider solids to be "target" ammo for zeroing

OrvarHarlan, when living in the UK, i asked the FEO and he allowed the "expanding ammo", just took a letter. Hope yours will understand.

IndyI shot impala with 300 grain North Fork soft points, the same loads I used for the first two shots at Cape Buffalo and for lion. Worked just find for all of them. In fact, my impression was that the .375 killed faster than on a previous safari where I used 180 grain Partitions at a higher velocity.
Just take a .375 with one bullet weight. Don't worry about light loads. Solids and softs will shoot to the same POI.

crbutlerSolids work well on small stuff and don't blow it up so your taxidermist hates you. The bigger softs like you would use with buff are also not likely to cause problems unless you hit a big bone, then you will get an impressive exit wound, mostly from bone fragments, but depending on how you want to position it, they are still workable for most taxidermy.

Bren7X64BTW, just take, at the most, 2 loads. It's bad enough when you have solids and softs, so when you're after buff, you load all solids and a soft on top ..... imagine if you had a badger/impala/reedbuck load as well.
The guys are giving good advice, I'd use the softs for everything except the south end of a buff going north.
I took a Rowland Ward klipspringer with a PMP 300 softpoint in 375 a few years ago. You could eat the meat right up to the hole. Eating the hole itself gave me gas
Which gives you an idea of pelt damage ie zero

CaracalI use .458 Win.mag on all kinds of game. Solids work fine for small game.
