Great video and a fantastic bull! ______________________ I don't shoot elk at 600 yards for the same reasons I don't shoot ducks on the water, or turkeys from their roosts. If this confuses you then you're not welcome in my hunting camp.

Well done. Congrats! I think that's the first time I have seen anyone shoot an elephant in bare feet. Cheers Canuck

Canuck, Every elephant I have ever seen shot was barefoot. When did you ever see an elephant wearing shoes? Anton, Yes! Very cool shot. The traversing side brain shot at 100 yards? ... Requiring a lead of how many inches, assuming a 400-grain .416 bullet at 2400 fps ... if the elephant is pacing along at 5 mph? Luck or skill? Did you just knock it out with a near miss on the first one and finish with three more perfect shots?

Extremely cool. I felt for you as I watched you hike through that river sand. Tracking elephant in that stuff is tiring work!

The first shot is the purple arrow - the 2 group shots are at the same distance as you say around 100 yards. Skill or luck you decide ( But i were aiming at that earhole). One thing is for sure i have had some nightmares about that shot - it was not a easy one !

We just had a thread where "scope or irons" was the question re: elephant hunting. I voted for the irons. Sure seemed that a scope came in very handy on this shot, though. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Fantastic group for stickshooting on the final three-shot group indicated by the yellow arrow. The distance between the points of the yellow and purple arrows indicates the amount of lead required, assuming you aimed for the same point on all shots. I think you severed the elephant's spinal cord or brainstem at the base of the brain with that first shot indicated by the purple arrow. Immediate death either way. Your other three shots took out some elephant gray matter in the cerebral hemispheres. Great hunting, great shooting. My hat is off to you.

Yeah, I think you probably missed the brain. But dead as a door nail anyway. Lead for elephant: assume 5 mph elephant stroll: 7.33 fps distance to elephant, 100 yards: 300 feet MV of bullet: 2400 fps assume .380 BC of bullet, 100 yard velocity: 2179 fps estimate average velocity for bullet: 2289.5 fps estimated time-of-flight of bullet: 300 ft/2289.5 fps = 0.131 sec elephant travel: (7.33 fps) x 0.131 sec = 0.960 foot The lead = (0.960 ft) x (12 inches/ft) = 11.52" About one foot. Now we know that the most versatile elephant rifle is one with a low power variable scope and high MV so as to decrease the amount of lead required in some situations. Something of .375 to .510 caliber, with the proper solid bullet, and MV of 2400 to 2700 fps, whatever the hunter can shoot accurately. Smaller than .375 is illegal. Bigger than .510 caliber is just cumbersome, ostuntatiousness.

Anton has inspired a new aspect of sport hunting! Elephant Pass Shooting! It can only get better when elephants learn to fly! BEST elephant rifles: 1. Throw a 0.3-SD or slightly better monometal copper or brass FN solid at 2700 fps MV 2. Have a low-power variable scope 3. Are synthetic stocked for utmost reliability. 4. Are well balanced and portable, not so heavy as to discourage being in hand and instantly ready ay all times. 5. Meet all legal requirements for caliber and energy, with the smaller legal calibers being more advantageous in meeting requirement #4. If Saeed will get a 1X-4X scope on his .375/404 Jeffery rifle, and turn out some Walterhog FN solids, I'd say he was well equipped for pass-shooting some Jumbos. Interesting that the .416 Remington has a bit over 100 yards advantage on the 450/400 NE 3", for elephant pass shooting.
