U.S. embassy says has information on planned terrorist attacks in South Africa
Thomson Reuters
Jun 4th 2016 8:25AM

The U.S. government has received information that terrorist groups are planning to carry out attacks against places where its citizens congregate in shopping areas in South Africa, its embassy said on Saturday.

"This information comes against the backdrop of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant's public call for its adherents to carry out terrorist attacks globally during the upcoming month of Ramadan," it said in a statement posted on its website.

It singled out up-market shopping areas and malls in the commercial hub of Johannesburg and Cape Town, widely regarded as South Africa's tourism capital, as the main target areas.

South African police declined to comment and said they were studying the U.S. embassy statement.

Last September, the U.S. also warned its citizens of a possible attack by "extremists" against its interests in South Africa, a stable democracy seldom associated with Islamist militancy.

The embassy and consulates in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town closed for several days in 2009 after what U.S. officials described as a "specific" threat to diplomatic missions in South Africa.

Radicalization is happening in SA. Young folks are disenfranchised and angry. Perfect for manipulation and action.

Radicalization happens on many fronts, like the failure of government to put the nation first but line their own pockets and fleecing the state coffer. Local government fails on service delivery whilst bribery and corruption is in order of the day. Then on top of that those that are in power make cadre appointments. They raise their salaries to 40% above the private sector just for some extra comfort. Then instead of uniting the nation you polarize it with political speeches. This is pretty much what we have at the moment.

For the rest of the world we also see disturbing trends - dishonest politicians that lie and deceive voters. The EU is just one such undemocratic example of wanting to become a Super Parliament. The EU leader (Juncker)is so blatant that he says in public that member nations should ignore the will of the people/voters - basically the EU steams ahead like a despot that cannot be held accountable. The people will rise on this as Europe went through countless wars to draw their borders, and the EU wants to make one Super State - they will deceive by just calling it another name. Multi-culturism is a failed project and is failing Europe that is now trapped in an even more severe situation with the refugees.

“You are asking whether the Euro will survive. I hope that it will not, but apparently the German and the French governments will try to save it at any costs to their people. It appears that the bureaucrats in Brussels are pushing hard for a Western European Soviet Union. They do not care about the deep seated cultural, economic and language differences on this Continent and they do not respect the sovereignty of nations. They aim for a super power with enhanced centralization in Brussels.” ---- by Elliott R. Morss

Tp say that about the continent Africa is a bit dramatic for me. It`s easy to say that about most places now. I would say that the danger going to Europa has changed more than Africa as a whole. Except maybe North Africa.

BREAKING: Britain follows US in issuing terror alert for SA
2016-06-06 14:26

Cape Town – The British government on Monday issued an alert warning its citizens of a high terror threat in South Africa.

This comes after the US issued a similar warning on Saturday after it said it had "received information that terrorist groups are planning to carry out near-term attacks against places where US citizens congregate in South Africa, such as upscale shopping areas and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town".

On Monday, the UK government said in a statement: "There is a high threat from terrorism. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners, such as shopping areas in Johannesburg and Cape Town."

There was considered to be a heightened threat of terrorist attacks globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria, Britain’s foreign office said.

State Security Minister David Mahlobo earlier on Monday downplayed the US government’s terror alert, giving assurances that his department was doing all it could to keep South Africa safe against attacks.

Where can a guy find this information besides the media?

My wife and I are leaving for SA, including a 3 day stint in Cape Town, in just 2 days.

I'm not a natural worrier. But want to be informed. The state department website has not current travel warnings or travel alerts to South Africa

Australian govt also warns citizens in SA after US terror alert

2016-06-06 16:58

Selene Brophy, News24

Cape Town - The US has issued a terror alert, with the UK following suit - adjusting its travel advisory to a high-terror alert - with malls across SA ramping up their security in response.

As a result, the Australian government has since updated its travel advisory for South Africa, saying: "The US government issued a terrorism alert to its citizens in South Africa on 4 June, 2016.

"The warning notes that 'the government has received information that terrorist groups are planning to carry out near-term attacks against places where US citizens congregate in South Africa, such as upscale shopping areas and malls in Johannesburg and Cape Town'.

"Be particularly vigilant in areas frequented by foreigners at this time. The level of this advice has not changed. We continue to advise Australians to exercise a high degree of caution in South Africa," the Australian government advised.

News24 reported earlier that State Security Minister David Mahlobo on Monday had downplayed the US government’s terror alert, giving assurances that his department was doing all it could to keep South Africa safe against attacks.

It was part of the United States government’s "standard precautionary recommendation to its residents", he said in a statement.

"We remain a strong and stable democratic country and there is no immediate danger posed by the alert."
